AWOL miror.

I was tracking down (read trying to track down) my oil leak and had my mirror in front of the the manifold and it broke leaving a nice 1"x1.5" bit of glass in there. I suspect no harm will come but I'm not sure how it could eventually extricate itself given the tin around the engine.

Paranoid?

Ps. Good news in looks nice and dry up in there.

Did it fall under the crank pully (no big issue but get it out) or into the intake manifold (paranoid and rightly so)? Need more info here.

Get a Flexible Claw Pick Up / Automotive Tool Grabber. (or a stick with some gum)

Sorry. Fully asembled engin in car. I was trying to see the top front of the engine past the throttle, airbox and intake manifold when the inspection mirror broke leaving behind a peice if glass on the top front of the engine ahead if throttle and air box. Pretty sure no big deal but I'm not sure of moving parts in that area.

Jp-oh,

I would not worry too much if you left the mirror there. But if you really want to locate and retrieve this piece of mirror, find another mechanic's mirror and start looking. It's very cheap at HF.

If this makes you feel any better, I used a small mirror to inspect the same area on my 73.5. What I found was someone had left/lost a VW bus elephant ear mirror back there and it had been riding around on top of the engine for I don't know how long, but it had to be a couple of years, at least.

Actually that does make me feel better. Especially since it was also a mirror. I would have also accepted a beer bottle, some china or anything else kind of glass-like.

Do a couple of track events. You'd be surprised at the amount of stuff that works itself loose from back there and slides to the left or right side of the tins for easy pickins'.

Our track closed two years ago (rip) so I just deliberately drive the most circuitous and curve-laden route to and from work possible and do so early enough that there’s little other traffic. I shook that mirror up pretty good today.

I like Tony's idea about another mirror. Take extra steps to get some BIG light back there too.

Compressed air may dislodge it from it's hiding place?

not the same as putting in 9-10 consecutive laps at 9/10ths on a closed track.

tape a smaller hose to your wet-dry that will wiggle in there and grab the mirror.
