I think the twist look good on your cab. They are excellent wheels.

javadog 08-28-2013 05:30 AM

Why modify the car? Just because you can, or to solve a specific problem? For a lot of people around here, it's the former excuse, something I am not in favor of...

Ditch the wheels. You said you hated them, so sell them and buy a pair of 16" Fuchs. That's what the car came with, they are lighter than the wheels you have and you can get great tires for them at the moment.

Consider repairing any interior parts that you are not happy with. I can't imagine worn out door panels on a car like that but if they are not 100%, fix them. Skip the useless crap like Rennline floorboards. Things like shift knobs... again why change what you have? I find Porsche knobs to work pretty well. Aftermarket knobs usually stand out like a sore thumb, in the typical understated Porsche interior. I also like the stock steering wheel in that car. It works well. Most people that change the steering wheel pick a smaller one, which increases steering effort, obscures the gauges, etc. Why? You get my drift....

If you own one of these cars for a long time, you'll eventually wonder why you changed much of anything. You might even wish it were stock again.

At the risk of stating the obvious, do whatever makes YOU happy. If everyone else liked pink daisy wheels, would you put them on your car? Of course, if knowing that you own a car that is optimized for resale value makes you happy, then that should be your goal.

To that end, I believe there is a "poll" feature on this forum (at least there used to be). You can always use this to gauge reaction to any modifications you are considering, i.e., put it to a vote.

^^^ This. Build the car for you, not the next owner :)

To the guys who said factory only for resale value, have u seen Magnus's 300k non factory franken-porsche 72?

McLovin 08-28-2013 11:09 AM

Obviously, there are exceptions for some highly customized cars, for example, RUFs, Singers, or Walker's car, etc.

Those are rare, though, and don't have anything to do with something like putting Turbo twists, a 12 inch steering wheel, goofy bright aluminum pedals and a phallic shift knob on an otherwise stock 911.

Magnus has been elevated to "artist" status. If you or I built the same car, we'd be lucky to get $50-75K ;)

Sometimes it's better to let your creative juices flow by writing some Beatnik poetry or something, and leaving your ride alone.

I'm of the "you can't take it with you" school. So drive it, enjoy it, customize it, and whatever else you want because the next guy that come along to buy that car may not give two craps about all of the agony you put yourself through in thinking about these things.

And yeah the turbo twist look "wrong" on the air cooled, maybe the 993 is the only one that can pull them off.

If I could build that car I would!

Magnus has a knack for staying within the Porsche spirit but doing something different. Not everyone has that knack.

For me, perfection has been achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Don't get me wrong, I love what Magnus does. And I love that he has done it for himself. But like any artist, once you are "discovered", your work suddenly commands a premium.

I guess if you are not artistically inclined yourself, the challenge is to find the next Magnus and buy his work before everyone else does.

...art, or desecration?

There is always some officious intermeddler (concours wienie) at a car show who will walk up to you and tell you your car is "incorrect."

yeah I don't wanna be that guy - what I want to do is to respect the heritage.

RWebb 08-28-2013 02:14 PM

in that case the term you are looking for might be "period correct" - usually used with respect to early cars

S2GART 08-28-2013 05:25 PM

Did you buy the car for you or the next guy......? I once owned a 1983 Mercedes 380SL which had brushed stainless steel wiper arms. The rest of the tyim was polished stainless steel/aluminum. So to make the wipers match, I polished them. At a car show someone told me I can't do that. They are supposed to be brushed. In my head I was saying, "....that's strange I didn't see your name on the title".

sacoffee 08-28-2013 06:58 PM

The car is for me, I am over modding cars (BTDT) but I want to also make sure any mods I do on this car are factory or acceptable aftermarket.

Noah930 08-28-2013 07:19 PM

The OP was asking for deviations from OEM/stock mainly for cost reasons. But I've found that the mods we, as Porschephiles, seem to consider desirable (from a consensus) usually aren't cost savings from restoring a car using stock used parts.

So you don't like the Turbo Twists. A set of Fuchs will run what, $1000-2000? Fuchs repros (non-Euromeister or Rota) such as from Lindsay, TruDesign, Zuffenhaus, etc or Ruf wheels will cost $3-4K. Wheels from Fikse/CCW/BBS/RH/Panasport aren't cheap, either.

Swapping to a Momo Prototipo is about a $600 affair (wheel & adapter). A replica wooden 917-style shift knob is $70-80. A quality exhaust system isn't cheap. OEM-style interior fabrics (whether leather, vinyl or tartan) and the labor to install them well isn't cheap. If you're going to restore a car to a standard with which purists will be satisfied, I don't think going with non-factory but period-correct parts will be less expensive than browsing the classifieds here for used stuff.

You will need to determine whose acceptance you are seeking before you will be able to define "acceptable". If it is the people on this forum, take a poll as I suggested above. That way you will know for certain what the majority of Pelicans like. Nothing wrong with that, if that's what makes you happy.

As one said earlier, its a moving target. I bought my longhoods before it was the rage. I converted a G to 993TT body, but now less thrilled with 993 than before. I couldn't stand the Turbo Twist on the GT2 and have CCW's on it, but I'm now debating on reinstalling them for street duty as they hit a vintage state. Wow, a GT2 is now almost a classic by definition.....who'd thunk such.

Long-short. Trends change, people change and you'll change. Just be tasteful and conservative and enjoy!

Anyone else think the Cayenne was improved, LOL
