Stir the Mid 7s pot with the Magenta 74

Check out the Magenta MFI 74 at the Auto Gallery for $249K. Lots of debate on the numbers, etc... CPR did a metallic brown one a year or two ago that went for mid 100's.

wow is right!

I don't think I've EVER heard one good thing expressed about a 74.........

This article was a breathe of fresh air, if for nothing else at least it was a good read and put a smile on my face.

I have NOOOOOOO complaints about my 74.

I have 325K miles on mine (NOT KM..... miles) and i have had it for 25 years.

It isn't a show car, it isn't a track car, it isn't perfect, it is a bit of a bastard but I love my little 74.

oh ya.... my wife and I drove away from the church in the 74 after we got married couple of years ago (at the wifes request!)

Any Pelican have the 1st 74 manufactured for the USA? Wonder how many 74's are actually still in operating condition?

I remember this article from a few years ago, very interesting.

I too have a 74 purchased a few years ago. I also had a 73.5T that I bought new and sold it (like an idiot) about 17-18 years ago. Started looking for another 73 a few years ago but a little too late as as the prices had already started up. Really wanted another long hood but ran across the 74 and could not pass it up.

Honestly it has taken some getting used to the bumpers but driving the car is a joy. The 74 even with high miles seems quicker than the 73 was from my recollection. When I first got the 74 I really contemplated back dating it to a long hood, but no more. Car is so original that as time goes on I really believe these 74's will hold a special place for early 911's in the future. To me the narrow body 74 really is a long hood but just happens not to have the long hood anymore!

Imagine if Porsche had delayed the bumpers until 75 and still updated the engine to 2.7 as the article pointed out. What a unique car that would have been.

A picture of the 73 from an old 35mm faded slide and the current 74.

I agree with many of the authors points about the 74 having some nice unique advantages vs. the 75-77 US mid-years. However he fails to mention that a LATER ROW car might have all those and more.

For example I have a 1976 911 ROW coupe, it has the following advantages:

- lighter non 5-mph bumpers with the small rear bumper pads ala the US 74

- fully galvanized chassis (huge, WAY less rust issues)

- never had any emissions equipment: thermal reactors, 5-blade fan, air pump, etc.

- very low options = low weight. Mine has no sunroof, no AC, crank windows, no radio, no foglights, etc. just a pure, light and basic car.

I personally love the narrow body, deco trim, and smaller rear bumpers, Etc. The only thing I hate is the body color flag mirror, the 74 is way more elegant (although less functional). I would much rather have the galvanized chassis vs. almost any other change.

Overall, great cars finally getting some respect!

Interesting cars, but that article has way too many errors in it.

Cvlc sweet ride

Yes, fully galvanized is a big PLUS. We earlier middies need to lift up our skirts when its raining.
