3.4L upgrade ?
Hi and yep done the search thing, but I can't find what I'm looking for. I know there has been threads before but I can't find them. My 1985 3.2 is in good condition, but over the winter I am going to do the top end, as in valve guides, seals and any thing earls that needs doing. So I might as well fit new 3.4 pistons and cylinders, Plus 964 cams, remap the SW chip. Can any one give me any idea if there is any thing more I need to do? and what can I expect in the way of performance. I'm not looking at top speeds or higher reeves, but down low grunt around the 3000rpm's. The car is street use and the odd DE days. I could go for a 3.6 transplant but the cost is more and I would like to keep the engine looking like the 3.2.
Thanks Steve. |
you can expect a performance increase of 3.4/3.2 + a tad

I considered doing 964 cams in my 89 3.2 then i fell upon a nice 95 3.6 and went ahead with that option ... first day on the track today and the difference is quite considerable ... plus hydraulic lifters and dual plugs and a 6850 rpm rev limit ...
Even managed to get by a few stunned GT3's ... It will cost a lot more money to get that performance out of a 3.4 ! Just sayin ... Cheers Phil |
I am looking at doing the exact same thing. Reason I like this conversion is the car will still look totally stock. My shop thinks about 25hp and 20ft lbs extra on a Euro motor. I think its about USD 5k for the pistons, barrels and cams.

My 3.4 build detailed in the link in my signature.
Last dyno at 273 bhp, 245lbft Would recommend the KEP l/w pressure plate for extra zingy ness. |
I've been running my 3.4 for bout 10 years now. The rebuild sheet goes like this.
Mahle 3.4 P/C 964 cams 964 twin distributer, /Andial twin plug management Bored throttle body Extrudehone polished intakes Steve Wong custom chip SSI's exhaust Magnaflow custom exhaust twin outlet All the needed engine hardware and bolts to hold it together. I can't argue that the car is rock solid. I am getting around 270 at the wheels after many chip swaps. Could get more if we ran it on race gas and played more with the engine management I'm sure. Coupled this with rebuilding the G50 to more track usable gearing and my car is a keeper. Would I do it again? Probably not. I would buy an earlier car and shove a 3.6 in it for less money but I'm not complaining. |
The 993 already has 275 H.P. I just would not spend thousands on 25-40 more H.P. When almost any newer sporty car out there (Mustang GT Camero SS, WRX, Dodge Challenger/Charger RT or SRT ) will blow the doors of our old little cars. These cars have 300-450 H.P.! Easy.

I just finished rebuilding my 3.5L engine. Basically a stock 3.2L with 100mm mahle motorsport cylinders and 964/993 pistons. Heads are reworked and twin plugged. 964 distributor/andial twin plug, Stock cams, ssi exhaust, bored throttle body. Feels pretty close performance wise to my old 74 911 with a 993 transplant .
