Cibie hood-mounted lights

I have been offered a pair of original Cibie hood-mounted lights in superb condition which were taken from a '73 RS.

However before I finally decide whether to go ahead & buy them, I have a couple of questions:

1) When these are mounted on the hood, is there anything (apart from a rubber? gasket) that goes between the lamp base & the hood ?

2) Is there a strengthening plate which goes on the underside of the hood beneath each lamp ?

3) The picture below was posted by Nick Moss in a previous thread on hood lights - what are the black items (just visible) sticking out at the base of these lamps ?

4) Does anyone have a close up shot of the underside of the Cibie lamps showing the mounting point ?

5) At what distances from the lower corners of the hood are the lamps mounted ?

Thanks

Andy Boyle

Hi Andy,
1) There is a rubber gasket that goes between the flat part of the shells and the hood
2) there is a strenghtening plate that goes under the hood
3) the black items ARE the strenghtening plates
4) sorry, no pic, but it is (3) 8 mm screws, and a central hole for the wiring
5) Wherever the racing team felt they were OK at the time

Thanks for the reply George.

The lamps I'm considering buying have the flattened base with the central hole & 3 x 8mm studs protruding & the rubber gaskets but the 'strengthening plate' is just a circular plate with a central hole & 3 holes around the edge for the studs to pass through (overall approx 2-3 inches in diameter).

Do you have the shape/dimensions of the strengthening plates as shown in the picture in my earlier posting ?

I've heard others referring to 'wedges' used with these Cibies - what are they & when/where would they be used ?

Hi Andy,
The plates are like squares with widely rounded 2 upper corners, and little rounded lower corners. I don't have them with my Cibies.
The wedges are used when the lights are mounted on an incline too steep or too shallow for the adjusting possibilities of the lights. 2 good examples are lights mounted too low on a long hood 911, or on the hood of a 914. They are just that-wedges made of aluminum.

Hood mount rally lights

Andy,

The strenthening plates are available... it's MSRoadrace that has a few sets of them. www.msroadrace.com

The circular plate you have is simply a "washer" that fits between the body and the lights. I have a rubber piece that also fits between the lights and the body.....got it from Parts Obsolete...but neither the owner of Parts Obsolete or I can remember what the rubber is that we used...as it was something that just happened to fit.

As far as location, I put the bottom ring of my lights in "line" with the bottom ring of my headlights. This allows them to "fit" just on the inside corners of where the metal goes from double to single on the hood.

Here's a link to my car with the lights mounted.

By the way....I'm the one that sold the lights pictured to Nick....

regards,
Eric

Kevin I would still like to see a picture of the strengthening plates.

If they're already mounted, a picture of the underside of the hood showing the mountings would be useful.

Thanks George. Maybe I should have painted it green. One note about these fog lights. Your cylinders will not hold the hood up because of the extra weight. I looked for stronger cylinders but feared stressing the hinges too much. That would explain the high tech piece of conduit holding it up.
Regards
Kevin

What about front bumper mounting? No holes in hood, proably a steadier beam w/less vibration and easier to run wiring. If it's serious rallying you're after a removable roof light bar is another option and gets the lights up where they can really light up the countryside. We used to aim rally driving light in a X pattern...L pointed to R half of the road.

Ted, what are the benefits of the X pattern?

Jared,
We used the X pattern, as I recall, to give a little more offset for road side sign hunting (where navigational speed changes occur) on dark Calif. mouintain roads AND have a nice "hot spot" directly in front of the car where the beam patterns crossed. These were 300,000CP narrow beam driving lights. Came around a bend once only to light up a oncoming CHP cruiser...ooops. (He didn't bother to turn around..probably had little red spots dancing in his eyeballs)
