Protomotive after market turbos and CA smog tests???
Has anybody in California had any experience with installing an aftermarket Protomotive turbo system on a 911 and then having the car smog tested at a CA testing station?
Please don't post any "Oh, no, I can't believe you'd even think about putting an aftermarket turbo on a NA 911" responses. My mind isn't made up yet to even do this, I'm just curious about the impact such a modification would make to passing CA smog tests. ![]() Thanks! |

Any engine modifications to be smog legal in California needs a Cal Air Resources Board (CARB) excemption Executive Order (EO) number, proving it doesn't harm emissions. If Protomotive jumped through the hoops to get that number (Which I doubt) then it will be able to pass smog. For more info, go here.

I'm sure they have great stuff, but I didn't see anything about CARB certification.
Unless you're willing to un-bolt all the stuff and un-do the conversion every 2 years, or have a spare stock engine you can bolt in, or have a pre-74 car, I don't recommend it. I had enough hoops to jump trhu to legalize my 3.6L conversion, and it was pretty much stock.
