A- Arm Assembly - Do I Need This Part?

Hi'

I was hoping for some help. I am assembling the A-arm on a 77 911S. I found this part in a diagram...do I need it? I see that it is not on the S/C, but do I need it? Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I cant copy the picture...I will try to describe it; It is between the "track control arm" and the "protective bracket" for the control arm. It looks like a washer???

Thanks!

James,

Change your name to "Young Skywalker" if you can't even post a stinkin' picture.

Give us a number from the pic below. Also, Never utter the phrase A arm again.

Yoda :D

Great...15/1 is the part number.

I will never say A-arm again.

What's wrong with A-arm...?

However. you need it if you see some space to te chassis when mounted #15 then you need it:

Nothing is wrong with it. Everybody know what it means. They are control arms, though. Just having some fun. FWIW -> URO Parts Porsche 911 Front Control Arm Bushings - YouTube

Now, to the bushing/fat washer.....

I copied the second page of the parts diagram and it does not list the part number as applicable to the 77. It shows the part (above) but not the part number as there is no 15-1 reference (below). This is common to use drawings that show all the parts but if it is not applicable (ROW vs US) they don't reference the part in the parts list. I think this is the ROW catalog and not the US catalog.

If have the US catalogs at home but can't get to them till later tonight.

Here is a link showing no washer using the protective cover to perform a search. It shows the washer but no reference to number.

This appears to reflect the same info in the PET diagrams I have. I am thinking you do not need it but I will check my us catalog tonight on the chance the US cars require it?

Any chance he's talking about the infamous spacer installed for a few years on the top of the struts on US cars?

No, it is the part labeled 15/1 in diagram.

Proffighter, my control arm looks different, maybe just the angle of picture.

Here is a picture of mine with the bolt screwed all the way in, I do not have the control arm or track control arm in place.

Sometimes Porsche puts parts on the diagram in weird places. Just because it is drawn in that area doesn't mean that's where it goes...

That piece Roland is picturing goes on the rear at the control arm/steering rack crossmember. The spacer in question is on the front.

It doesn't list 15/1 in the regular PET for the 77 911 but 15/1 does appear in the listing for the 75-77 930 (a separate PET section for just those early 930 cars).

I believe the spacers we're talking about here are used on 930 cars for the additional anti-dive benefit. In later 78-89 PET, that spacer Roland pictured is part number 2 for 930 cars, called an adapter. Ironically 15/1 disappears from the PET listing for 78-89 930. Reason being is because I believe it was added permanently to the control arm carrier piece in the front. Complete control arm (part 13 in the diagram above) is listed differently for the 930 vs. the 911 from 78-89.

He identified the part he is wondering about in the first diagram above as part 15-1.

I wonder if it does have to do with US bumper height regulations though? If that catalog I pulled that pic from is a ROW - and I am pretty sure it is - it would not reference the part if it had to do with only a US car. Would (may) show the pic but delete the number.

The 77 ROW catalog does not show the giant top of strut washer - neither does the SC catalog - but I know I pulled those out of my 81.

OK, so is the gap I have normal?

KTL, I think the anti-dive spacers were added to the track control arm (part 13). They were on the 930 cars, this being a 911S, it may have had it.on some cars. They were oval washers that were welded on. At least teh set I have (spare) look like they were welded.

Yes, but like I said, Porsche often put the pictures of the parts in odd places on the diagrams, so you never know. The only part I can think of that would be on a US car and not on a ROW car is the strut spacer.

I'm also familiar with the turbo spacer that was used until they modified the sheet metal of the underbody.

Some of the recent PET versions are getting pretty sloppy (or actually wrong) on what parts were originally used on a specific model. I have a much older version of it on my desktop that I keep around, as it's much more informative than the current version. Unfortunatley, I can't access it at the moment.

All I know is that I have a '77 Carrera 3.0 in the garage and it doen't have a spacer like that, so I doubt he needs one either.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I will bolt it together, and see if there is any gap. I doubt there will be.

Ferrino 09-05-2013 08:09 AM

FYI, my '76 US 911 does not have that part.

Nooooo that is not the bracket of the crossmember, it's my bracket for the front bumper...

However, as said above, 930 are a bit different in cause of the anti dive. Therfore the front bush carrier ha a spacer welded on, see my pic. NA's are flater. BUT if you mount the carrier together with the protector (which has a tow hook), then I have a space and therefore a spacer, see pic too. If there is no space between, no need for spacer, got it?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1378421393.jpg

BTW, you can torque the bolt until you need no more spacer, but that's definately a bad idea... So I guess there are some cars out there without spacer for that reason. Not meaning everyone needs one, as other said too
