question about interior lights for '72 911

I am in the process of putting my car back together after 6 years of restoration. Before I put the dash on, I wanted to make sure the light above the lighter works. What triggers this light to come on? I thought it was the door. Is it in series with the dome light of my targa baecause the dome light is currently disconnected?

My car is a coupe...could be different? You mean the light above the glove box? If so, on my coupe it's a rocker switch. The lens itself rocks to offer various light positions...always off, always on, or comes on & off when opening or closing the glove box door.

pwd72s,

You were right, this light is triggered by the glove box door. I still cannot get it to work. It has 12v going to it but the glove box switch is not turning it on.

Jon...there should be three "clicks" to the rocker, which is activated by pressing on the lens of the light. All the way to the front of the car, light is activated on or off by the glove box door. To the center, permanently off. To the rear, permanently on. Just press on the forward or rear edges of the lens, see what happens...if nothing, maybe contacts in the rocker are corroded (assuming you're getting a good 12V reading on the wires to the bulb) OR, the bulb is burned out...THat's where I'd start anyway. BTW, don't feel bad...I drove my 1st 911 with this feature for about a year before I even discovered a light was there...the "clicks" take more pressure than those in the interior lights, probably because of the shorter pivot axis...Oh, this feature should work seperately from the key...key in or out of the ignition shouldn't matter.

I feel like an idiot. The light was in the center off position. After some lubrication, the rocker switch now works smoothly. Thanks pwd72s for all your help.
