I just got the bill for my head and oil cooler work from EBS.
$400 for valve job $130 for req'd machining (sealing surfaces) $65 for R&R of oil cooler $4 a pop for new exhaust studs $13 a pop for labor for time-certing the new studs $.50 a piece for 6 new valve spring shims (oooooooh) With S&H and insurance it looks like I'll be spending about $800 on this job. Yippie. |

Maybe I'm totally warped, but that does not seem too expensive to me.

Leland you came out smelling like a rose.
My valve job from EBS set me back $1250 or so. That included Valve Job (3way grind) 12 valve springs 12 valve guides and seals 6 valves Fly cutting the heads Replacement Head (when the valve bent it cracked the head) Top end gasket set I also had them replate the #3 cylinder (had a cut in the cylinder wall from bent valve) and when I was putting it all back together I dropped one of the pistons and broke it. All in all I gave EBS $1550 for a bunch of shiny parts I will never see, but at least my car will run and run strong at that. osidak |

Leland:
What price were you expecting? I don't have any comparable prices for you. You may want to look at what service caused the price to be higher than you expected. Was it the studs or the time-certing? Eric 83SC |

Ok, I should have made myself more clear
![]() I'm not pissed or suprised. I was expecting it to come up to around $700 or so. I already spent about $500 last April on new Valves and springs so it broke it up a bit. I'm just venting...and not really even venting at that....just thinking. this bumps me into the $5000 dollar "rebuild" catagory which I know is still fairly cheap all things considering. And yes, I wasn't expecting them to time-cert my studs and I didn't think it would cost $13 bucks a pop. But I am still a very happy customer and I would recoment those guys to anyone looking for machine work or engine parts. |

I think you like myself subconsciously compare the labor and machining costs for Porsche engine work to V8 prices; there is a big difference! The thing to ask yourself is did you get Porsche quality work or did you pay Porsche prices and get 4800 rpm red line V8 quality work? Sounds like you got some quality machining that the local V8 guy used to working on cast iron heads could not duplicate!

my nice lil oil cooler cost a nice 4 grand to replace. maybe this is a good excuse for my parents to let me drive a p-car instead of a heavy benzo.
