Light fixture under engine with missing bulb

Hi guys,

Working on my 1985 3.2 Carrera and found a fixture just above the engine on the lid with no bulb in it...
Any ideas as to what type of bulb belongs in there?
It's an odd looking thing and I've searched for threads and posts to attempt finding out what belongs in the fixture...

Thanks in advance for any help you can share! :)
Joe

Engine compartment lamp. Only works when the lights are on. I suspect it uses the same bulb as the interior dome lights, but don't quote me on that.

Thanks Arne - it's a good idea, and I tried that but apparently it's longer and bigger in diameter, looks a tad smaller than a C-size battery...

Got it !
I did a search of our host Pelican for Engine Compartment Lamp - Voila! There it is for only $1.25

It's called a festoon bulb. Turns on and off as you slide the cover open. As Arne said need to have at least the park lights on. Took me months to figure that one out. Probably as big around as an AA battery. Measure between the contacts to get approximate length. You could also check your owner's manual for the size. -J

It's a 37mm festoon bulb.

If yours was like mine, it's been a while since it has worked. Therefore, you might find that you must clean the contacts to get it to work. It's easy to do this.

be careful if you need to work on the engine lid fixture, the wires can be very dirty and brittle. You'll know if something's messed up when you put things back together and find out that your driver's side parking lamps and tail lights no longer operate. Ask me how I know.

Ok so I just ran down into the garage and checked voltage and there's nothing at the fixture and oh by the way I noticed that the interior light on the targa bar isn't working either! But the driver's side parking lamp and tali lights still work!

I noticed my engine bay light not working also. Then I noticed there was no wire running from the switch to the fixture...doh!

Engine compartment lamp/light fixture on a ducktail?

Not sure if I make sense which in most cases I don't. I am in the process of having my Stratton ducktail painted. I do not recall the ducktail having the bar or thingy where you mount the engine compartment/light fixture which is present on the factory tail. Has anybody tackled this issue? Did you guys just delete the engine compartment lamp or you just relocated it elsewhere? I don't even know if the ducktails came with a light on the engine compartment.

To tell you honestly, its been a year and a half since i bought the car and never figured out if that light was working.:D

It work whith parking light on When you slide the cover it ground contact most time you have clean the contact.

The black cover snaps on/off. Pull it off and you can see the contacts on the driver side. The silver sliding cover has to be all the way open for the contact to make and the light to come on. My problem was that someone had put the black cover on backward. It is not symmetrical and has to be snapped on in the correct orientation to allow the silver sliding cover to go all the way open and make the contact. I believe the bulb is the same as the glove compartment bulb and interior lamp bulb (and most likely the luggage compartment light bulb, though I have not tested that.)

The luggage compartment bulb on my '87 is different than the engine compartment and dome lights. The luggage compartment one is a "conventional" bulb, 10W if memory serves.

where is the engine compartment light mounted...anyone have a photo?

I replaced my factory whale with a duck tail. The duck did not have the metal bar that lines up to the latch where the light fixture is mounted. So I fabricated a bracket so I can still put the light fixture. What do you guys think?

Looks like a pretty clever solution!
