engine compartment "relay cover"

I am looking for the "relay cover" that installs in the left rear side of the engine compartment, covering the regulator/CD unit on a 1974 911. I had to replace the Perma-Tune unit and was told that water got into unit and the cover really needs to be installed. does anyone know where I can find one of these? Thanks!

I have the cover, but I don't believe it reaches over far enough to protect the CDI box. I do recommend cleaning the contacts and lubing with silicon grease, like Dow Corning 111. That way, they cannot corrode.

Superman,
Thanks for the quick reply! I'l like to buy the relay cover from you if you want to sell it, just email me at azasadny@ameritech.net with your price!

I think I can take the cover and add a section to it to cover the CD unit. I have lubed the wires/connectors with silicone and I don't get the area wet when cleaning the engine compartment, but I'm paranoid now!

Perma-Tune has been very helpful, as you have and I really appreciate it! I've only had the car since June, but all of the folks I've "talked" to (email) have been great. Thanks again.

Porcupine,

Thanks, I've looked through the PelicanParts websire, but couldn't find the part. We don't have any dealers anywhere around us, so I'll try to find one online (used part would be fine). Thanks for the part number!!!

Call Pelican, they often have parts that aren't on their website. I guess it's a hazard of having so many parts. Also, if they rpove to not have the part then you can order it to be delivered from some dealers (Hendrick Porsche, that was mentioned above).

Just one more thought. Aren't permatune boxes the things that I hear so much bad press about? Do a little searching, it seems like lots of people have problems with them and end up replacing them with another brand (Bosch?)

If Pelican doesn't have it try Stoddard in Ohio. They seem to have a never ending supply of hard to find parts.

Masraum,

I had a Perma-tune unit in my 911 when I bought it. The car wouldn't start (July 4th weekend) and I went to the Perma-Tune website, printed their troubleshooting docs, followed them and determined the unit was bad. i bought a new unit ($278) from Pelican Parts and installed it, along with a Perma-Tunw wiring harness and Bosch coil and Pertronix ignitor unit and it's been running great since. I have no complaints about the Perma-Tune unit (the one that failed was over 6 years old) and the support the guys at Perma-Tune provided was fantastic. The Bosch replacement CD unit is over $2000 if you can find one as they are NLA as far as I can tell.

Lonnie from Perma-Tune said that I should replace the relay cover as there was evidence of water getting into the unit and shorting it out. So, now I'm looking for the cover. Thanks to you and everyone for the helpful advice. You guys are great!!!

I'm a "newbie" Porsche owner and I'm having a great time and my wife is impressed that I'm doing the work on the car myself (so far). I purchased the car on eBay from a guy in Michigan about 4 miles from where I work and I couldn't be happier. Take care and happy motoring!

While I agree that cover should be in place, if for no other reason that to keep the fuse block protected ... there isn't any need to cover the CDI-unit, because it isn't in a drip path for rain! The ONLY way moisture could have gotten to that PermaTune unit is from a car wash wand!

Early_S_Man,

I've been cleaning the engine compartment/engine with Gunk foaming Cleaner and our garden hose, covering the distributor and elecronic components when I do so. Maybe the PO used a wand at the car wash (probably just prior to putting the car up for sale) and got water in the CD unit??? Anyway, I'd like to cover the regulator, etc... with the cover and I'll do my best to keep the Perma-Tune unit dry and happy. Thanks and take care!

Well, actually I have a microfisch reader and fisch that cover most all Porsche modells.
I found it's alot easier for the parts guys if I call in with numbers. That makes there job a bit easier.
Plus it gives me a quick interchange manual.
Chris
