Soot in engine compartment near #6 plug
In cleaning prep for removing valve cover, I was surprised to see a strong "soot" signature in engine compartment near #6 spark plug and oil cooler shroud. I am not that experienced (3rd valve adjust) and I don't recall seeing this before. Car was very dirty when I got it, so I might not have noticed it.
Since I can see oil cooler fins through gap between valve cover and oil cooler shroud, my assumption is that there is significant airflow in that area to leave that soot indicator. Is this normal? Should there be a better seal there to control airflow? Am I missing a part? Other theory? My approach is to keep things clean so I can see problems quicker. Perhaps I am looking to close. 88 3.2 at 108k miles searched quite a bit using all key words I could think of. thanks all |

Picture
picture shows "soot stain" near corner of engine compartment side wall and front wall. Subtle from this angle, but it was a pretty good indicator of something "going on". Thanks

That looks like oily dirt to me.

How tight should the gap between valve cover and oil cooler shroud be? Should I be able to clearly see oil cooler fins through gap? Seems large for controlling airflow in air cooled situation.
Probably is oily dirt and I should not have used term "soot". |
