What would prevent sunroof from closing flush @ rear?
I just replaced some cracked plastic parts related to the wind deflector at the front of my sunroof (this is a 1987), and sprayed a light coating of white lithium on the rails but none of this has helped the fact that it is recalcitrant to fully flush up at the rear. Without running the motor on/off a few additional times once the front is fully 'home' the rear will remain depressed and not flush up with the adjacent roof metal.
I've looked at the PET but can't decipher what would help this. The motor feels strong and the roof closes quickly, quietly and smoothly otherwise. Thanks for any ideas.

The sunroof panel is height adjustable at each corner. For lack of a better desciption there is a toggle and the back such that when you open the roof drops then back. Closing once the front edge hits the toggles lift up the rear. There is a height adjustment at the rear toggles. Could be that you just need and adjustment.
Open the sunroof a few inches and you can pull the liner down from the metal panel. There are metal trim clips across the front edge. You can use a plastic putty knife to get this started. Once the clips are pulled lose you can slide the interior panel back and see/access the hardware. You can get the inner panel back far enough and hold is back then carefully close the sunroof and observe the lift toggles in the back. -J This is probably the most comprehensive thread on sunroofs. +1 on rear height adjuster... I took mine apart to fix and had the exact problem.

I'd bet that the transmission drive is gunked up I would remove it and soak it in solvent to free it up (done this many times). It's most likely not the adjustments as it will eventually close correctly. I would not grease the cables as this would attract grime and dirt.

Simple dealing with a minor annoyance.
I know with mine, after several new parts and alot of adjustment, it sometimes doesn't "quite" push up and closed. I've gotten used to reaching up and giving it a little push up at the rear while the motor is still running. Its always seems to be up when I get out so.... I guess someday the sunroof may go away but I really do enjoy having it for now.

I had the same problem. I found the M4 0.7 bolt had fallen out of the toggle on one side and was lost. That's the upper pivot on the stolen photo above. I think it fell down the drain hole. Luckily the special serrated nut and wave washers were recovered. Fastenal to the rescue! One 12 cent bolt later (beats a $215 cable assy; Porsche doesn't even list the toggle parts separately), and I am back in business. Removing the sunroof also gave me the opportunity to re-glue the rear fuzzy seal.
