GHL C.A.R.B EO number
 

I see adds everywhere for the GHL cat systems that have CARB approval, but a phone call today to my local CARB office yielded a negative response.

What gives ?? I see adds from other people and they POST their CARB exemption numbers (MSD for one).

I know for fact that Texas and California do not allow you to add a second catalytic converter to a vehicle that was orginally equipped with ONE. So.. how do they sell a legal system with 2 cats ?? Ca. says you have to have the stock cat. Are the GHL's cats stock 911 parts (they sure are purdy)

I searched the archives for GHL before raising this question... funny stuff.

Oh.. I'm a 914 person who observed this.

I cantacted GHL in Jan. regarding when they were going to get the CARB approval. Here is his reply from May this year.

I am contacting you regarding GHL Motorsports 911 Cat. Headers for your 911SC and thank you for your continued interest in our stainless steel exhaust systems.

Our Header without cat. show a horsepower improvement of 12+ to the rear tires on a stock Porsche 911. The Headers with the cats. installed only decreased that number by an average of 1 to 2 horsepower through the entire RPM range and picked up as much as 4 foot pounds of torque.

To demonstrate how little the cats. affect performance we fed the dyno information into the computer and raced the same car against itself with and without the cats. The car with the cats. beat the car without the cats. by one foot in a fourth gear roll-on from 2000 to 6000 rpm's. Not bad huh.

The catalytic converter used in the GHL Cat. Headers carry an EPA and CARB approval number for use on a 911 Porsche and our system has demonstrated that it does not increase emissions. Although the GHL Cat. Headers meet the "sprit of the law" (passes emission numbers and has approved cats.) due to an insurmountable technicality it was deemed that it did not meet the exact "letter of the law" and GHL was declined a California Air Resources Board certification. GHL will continue to offer the complete Cat Header system where C.A.R.B. certification is not an issue or concern at $2,995.00.

They do not sell a legal system.

Here is how it works (I knew this all along):

The CARB people want you to test these cats on 2 cars for over 100,000 miles non stop while documenting and checking in with them once a month for progress reports. You can't test them for a SC and sell them for a Carrera. You must now test 4 cars. This is big money. If one of the cars is involved in a accident and totalled, you have to start all over with another car

CARB doesnt care if you have legal cats or not. You have to have the cats that the car came with (or in this case 1 cat)

Do people actually beleive in their advertising ??

Is anybody buying this stuff ??

Mr. Haney (Don) what are the sales numbers for these "kits?"

I find it suspicious that clean air is not the goal, but rather that the car must have a Cat. (or two)
Even if one creates an engine cleaner than any current spec, it still must have a cat. regardless of how clean the exhaust is.
What a law :rolleyes: It's one of those laws which history will look back at us and think we were idiots for accepting such a useless parameter. . . ..but aleast we'll have a few extra forest fires to our careless credit:rolleyes:

It baffles me. A Motronic engine in decent tune will pass emissions without the cat in place, but wont pass visual inspection.

I have worked for companies that have had products approved by CARB. This is why I was irritaed that GHL would run adds saying they had, knowing full well what it takes to get something through CARB.

Hey Brad.....Call the weenies at CARB and send them the ad. They will take steps to correct the copy, trust me.

As to visual tests and static tests showing similar numbers....all I can say is that a "like" replacement(s) may not perform like the original equipment for 100,000 miles as the original equipment was designed and tested to do.

What that means.....replacement equipment may fail to achieve the desired results during the course of 100,000 miles......
