Porsche Crest Widebody Carrera

I need to know if they ever made a 1987 carrera cabriolet with a factory widebody. If so are they rare, how many did they make? How much do they sell for? I must find out soon. Any other information about it would be helpful also, like what sets it apart from the others. Thank You!!!!!

I'm pretty sure they did make turbo-look Cabs in 1987. It's the M491 option (see details below):-

Features of the M491 SuperSport (Turbo-look) Option
-Turbo body (flared wheel arches front and rear)
-Turbo rear spoiler (the whale-tail)
-Turbo wheels (245/45VR16 tyres on 9J x 16 rims at the back, 205/55VR16 tyres on 7J x 16 rims in front)
-Turbo brakes - 4 pot calipers with 285mm & 290mm cross-drilled discs
-Turbo suspension, but NO turbo tie rods

Other options are the same as the 3.2 Carrera.

It was approx 0.2s slower than a normal Carrera from 0-60mph due to the extra drag & weight.

The turbo-look was worth more than a 'normal' Carrera. Not sure of exact numbers, but in the UK, they demanded £11K MORE and in Australia, approx $16K more.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Ciao,
Merv

Thet did make a factory "turbo look" cab in '87, but they did not make very many. They are rare. I know because I found someone trying to sell one last year, and did some research ... My memory tells me <400 were imported. The seller told me it was factory...When I got there, I noticed the calipers were standard carrera calipers, not turbo... no turbo tie rods,...etc... it was an after market conversion...a good one, but not the rare factory turbo look car I hoped for. Luckly the car was local, so I was noly out an hour of my time.

Yup, visually, the best way to tell is to look for the bigger 930 brakes. If it's not equipped with those, walk away.

Then you can ask for the books and have a look at the Options list and look for the M491 option.

None of the turbo-looks came with turbo-tie-rods. That was another one of Porsche's cost saving measures

No sweat

It's best to go into these things informed and KNOW what you're getting yourself into

There's nothing better than 'rolling' a salesman with your knowledge on the marque

Ciao

LOL @ Vic I was referring to the pre-sales 'rolling', not post-sales An informed buyer would have walked away from that car, thus saving his rear-end from a severe raping

PorSC81, I believe the June/July Edition of Excellence had a market report for this era 911. Check it out.

As for Aussie market rates, they are still fetching between $80-$90k (dealer advertised) I believe Private sale is between $70-$80k.

In 1987, according to PCNA, 10 coupes, 4 targas and 16 cabs were produced with the turbo-look option. There is an unfortunate reason why I know the exact numbers. I had to call PCNA after my mother's turbo-look targa (with LSD) was stolen out our driveway in Miami several years back. Unfortunately, the insurance company didn't value the car as much as we did.

Anybody from South America who has seen such a car? It's probably ours.

WydRyd,

Just noticed that you are "down under". The numbers I have come from PCNA, so I assume those are the numbers produced for the US. However, since the US buys about 1/2 of all Porsches, you can probably double or triple the numbers above and safely estimate the total production. In any case, it's a small number.

Thanks Neil!

I'll contact my local P-Centre and find out.

It's encouraging to know how rare these cars actually are

Merv

Have you found the car, are you selling, or are you looking for one?

From your avatar I am guessing you may be in Italy.

If so be careful. There are some absolute bargains in the Italian 911 market but also some dogs and some outright fakes. The Brescia, Bergamo, Mantova triangle seems to be the home of the iffy conversion, (some excellent ones too). Do not believe what you are told or evan the paperwork sometimes. The seller may be honest but he may have been taken in too! Also doublecheck all maintenance that was apparently done, previously owned 911 buyers and some long time owners in Italy often skimp on necessary maintenance, get bored when it no longer runs as it should, leave it in the garage for years and then sell it. One then spends six months fettling and sorting.

My father in-law has one of the 16 turbo look cabriolet's. His is triple navy blue with 8,500 miles (no typo) on it. He has owned it since new and it is a definite eye catcher.

He has owned a 993 and a 996 which have since been sold but his "Frog" will always stay. The car is in SE Michigan.

I thought I'd post this, purely for bragging rights

Australia received 203 Carrera's in 1989.
72 were Cabriolets
39 of those Cabs were Turbo-looks
