1973 911 T
I have a 1973 911 T, with CIS fuel injection. Recently, I drove it 20 highway miles. The engine quit running, I let it sit about 20 minutes, the car then started (after cranking 1 minute). I then drove it back to my house (20 miles) and it did the same thing, the engine quit and I could not start it. The strange thing is the car shut down both times after driving the same exact mileage.
I have changed the fuel filter, the plugs are o.k., I pulled 2 of the injectors and they are emitting a fine spray. The coil tested out o.k. and the plugs are sparking and the points seem to be fine. Do you have any ideas of what the problem could be? Thanks for your help. |

Was it hot/humid outside? I seem to recall a similar problem with a friend's 73.5 CIS many years ago that was traced to vapor lock problems???? -- Curt

My 73.5 T vapor-locked on a regular basis on warm days. Can't remember the fix but there is one. Someone will know....

Fuel pressure, meaning the fuel pump and the fuel accumulator setup may need looking at. I know you got a good spray pattern but it may not be supplying enough fuel at certain times - just a thought ?

I know the design is completely different but the symptoms are so similar I thought I would tell you my experience. It was a 71 911T with Solex carbs. After driving certain distances it would just quit and not restart until some time had passed. I finally noticed that it only happened with less than a quarter tank of fuel. The problem turned out to be very fine debris in the fuel tank. It would accumulate on the screen where the fuel line screws into the tank. As the fuel level got low, enough would be sucked up against the screen to stop the flow. After a while enough would float or fall away to allow restarting. I drained the tank, removed and cleaned the screen and never had any trouble again.
