HELP ! Guage wire melt
I am putting the guages back in my 76 and had a little meltdown last nite. I used wire numbers and thought I had done well, but something was terribly wrong. I melted the red/black wire from the tach at #3 which crosses over to the pressure temp. guage. Also the brown wire to the fuel guage melted, I believe that is the ground?!!
1)I need some pics if someone could or pull the guages and look to see where the red/black from the tach goes and what number it is on the tach, and where it goes on the temp/ pressure guage. 2)On the temp/pressure guage there is two multi prongs, what goes on the inside prongs which face each other. 3) where doed the brown wire go on the fuel guage? Thanks, time for some harness surgery! John

I don't know much but I know brown is always ground in these cars. I also completely rewired my 911SC dashboard and I also had a little meltdown (actually, more of a FIRE in my case)...and I found that using the electrical diagrams in the Haynes and on the Pelican website I was able to put everything back to normal functioning. I didn't use wire numbers, I used the color codes. And I think either Haynes or Pelican or Bentley or something actually had little drawings of the backs of the gauges included in the diagrams - I will check and let you know with an updated posting (note: Mine is a 1980 and may have different diagrams from yours). And I really don't know JACK about electrical wiring - or CARS in general for that matter. Really. No BS. No-one could possibly be more clueless. So if I was able to do it, absolutely anyone can.
Maybe not much help but at least I answered the brown wire question. Good luck !!

Thanks Janus, I don't know what the hell happened, but I do know for sure the brown was grounded, something shorted badly to do that to the ground. I think I got the wire to the temp pressure guage wrong, I know the red black is a guage power line

Be careful, brown is used as the hot wire for the dash lights. I had a similar fire in my 75S. The wire for the light over the ash tray shorted to the dash frame.

"Be careful, brown is used as the hot wire for the dash lights"
Jeez...sometimes I wonder if the folks in Stuttgart are deliberately setting traps for us in these cars... I checked my Bentley manual and it has really easy to read electrical diagrams...but no actual pics of the backs of the gauges. So I started searching the Pelican site and found some nice electrical diagrams...but they were for an 1982 SC...but that might be okay...Aside from the speedo (which I think is mechnical in your car and electronic in later cars), they may be able to help...here are links to some of the relevent diagrams... http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_82SC_Part5-1.jpg http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_82SC_Part5-2.jpg And here are some links to electrical diagrams for a 1973... http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_Part2.jpg http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_Part1.jpg It looks like the 1973 diagrams do provide some clues to the connections at the backs of the gauges...but you'll have to compare the diagrams to the "legends" which are here... http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_legend2.jpg http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_legend1.jpg On further inspection, those 1973 diagrams may prove very helpful if your gauges are similar enough... I'll try to dig up my Haynes to see if it is any better. And if I can get enough access to the front trunk, I'll try to stuff my digicam up there to see if I can get some good picks of the backs of the gauges in action...now that I think of it, my temp gauge is having some problems which may indicate a weak ground connection...might be a good chance to diagnose that as well... And on a more philosophical note: Is anyone else troubled by the thinly gauged wires Porsche used in these cars? I know they were trying to save weight but...I wonder if anyone has ever considered selling aftermarket wiring harnesses with thicker wires...in my heart I suspect a fair number of these little fires are caused by cheap wiring...okay, end of my idle speculation... Good Luck, keep us posted...
