Transmission/Speedo Problem - '87
A friend of mine with an '87 Carrera has an interesting problem. The car set for about three months, running good beforehand. When he went to drive it at first it was difficult to get into gear, but he fussed with it awhile and everything was OK. However the then noticed the speedometer wasn't recording any mileage, even though the speed indication was OK.
I don't see how the speedo is related to the shifting problem. As to that my first thoughts are that the clutch was hanging up/not disengaging for some reason or other (rust?) Ideas? |

Hi...I would tend to think that it was just a coincidence as an odometer gear failure is very common. - With age they get brittle and one or more of the teeth break off.
Our host sells a new and improved odometer gear for $25.00 - There is an excellent post on how to DIY - There are different gear ratio's depending on the year of the car, including km or mph. If he decides to repair it himself he will have to confirm how many teeth it has so as to order the correct gear. The following individuals have an excellent reputation on the PP board for repairing any of the gages...Many use 'North Hollywood Speedometer' repairs (CA) and or Paul's Speedometer Service'' located at Redondo Beach (CA)...The cost around $125.00 - $150.00 to repair depending on whether they find anything else wrong with it... E.G. - a transistor. (I replaced mine in the spring @75,000 miles - Its a '86.) Take care
