996 Changes in 1998 models thru 2001

DOes anyone knows of any changes in the 996 between 1998, 1999 , 2000, and 2001. I have read in some places that the 1999 had 296 Hp and 2000 has 3000 both with the same displacement. The 2001 I believe is 3.6 as opposed to 3.4. Does anyone know why the 2000 has 300 hp and the 1999 has 296? Any other info?

the 996 always had 300 bhp (in Europe anyway). I don't know where you get the 296 bhp from (unless Porsche US decided to call it 296 bhp for some reason). The 4 bhp in question lies within the engine power tolerance, so I would not worry about it.

The reason for the 296 hp is taxes. I think it was Japan, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it would cost a hell of a lot more to sell it as 300 hp than 296. Last year though they releaved the taxes and so Porsche brought the published hp to the actual amount.
