Rebuild late carrera axle shaft?

I ordered a new pair of half shafts and installed them but would like to rebuild one shaft to have as a spare. I can find the inner joint parts on our host's site, but nothing for the outer (stub axle) end. Is the outer end rebuildable, and if so, does anyone have any tips on working on this end?

I just checked the catalog, and it looks like outer and inner are the same.

Hopefully, someone smarter than I will chime in.

FWIW I have had mine done professionally by CV of Ocala. ~$150/shaft plus shipping.

I chose them because they polish the races, not grind them, and they'll install new balls from .001-.003" oversize to accommodate.

Got 20k mi on the rears of my C4 (rebuilt at 112k) and ~10k on the fronts, no complaints.

On the later model shafts the cap that the boot fastens to is crimped onto the joint and is not removable, so no, they are not rebuildable. Only the inner joint can be dismantled.

The outer joint can be dismantled, but you can't find a replacement for the outside race.

To dismantle, carefully grind (or better yet cut, if you have a lathe) the metal cap the boot attaches to right where it is crimped inward. You will have a ring attached to the CV, and the rest of the cap with a little lip covering the outer edge of the CV. The cap can then be removed, and the joint disassembled. To reattach, drill & tap 6 holes for M4 in the fat, soft part of the CV and bolt it back on with some short allen screws.

Update Carrera CV Boot replacement
