Help with ignition wiring
[IMG]
![]() ![]() I'm working on my 1977 911s Just bought it and it displayed intermittent starting issues that turned more into permanent starting issues. It had two problems one a bad starter that I replaced and an aftermarket alarm system that was tied into the ignition. During the process off removing the alarm wiring all of the plugs under the dash have been unplugged. I put everything back in place and when I turn the key the wipers and blinkers work involuntarily and the car does not start which leads me to believe that something is plugged in wrong. Under the dash there is three plugs; working from left-right which plug is for the ignition? Secondly; there are two wires on the ignition that I do not know where they go to a yellow wire and a yellow with red stripe. I appreciate any help here, thank you! |

Problem with aftermarket alarms is taking them out. Personally hate them, but thought a shotgun aimed out of dash and triggered with a solenoid would make a great one. Someone messes with my baby I would be more than willing to have to replace the interior.

As far as which plug to plug things back into... count the prongs and holes on what you are plugging in to what you are plugging in TO. I have 5 options on my car but each one has a different pattern of holes and blanks. Just match the male to the female receptacle. If in doubt, just take a look at the wires coming out on the front trunk side.
The ignition cluster plug is the one with all the heavy red, red/yellow, red/black, Yellow, etc. coming out of it Trunk side. On the wire ID side of things... The big solid yellow should be the one that goes off to the starter and starting circuit. Not sure about the yellow/red but that may be the radio or what powers the alarm. Don't quote me, because I'm not positive there. You could always just pull everything down within reach and just disconnect and reconnect things to see what works or stops working. That's how I sorted out my light switch. I suggest get a Bentley Manual. Has all of the wiring diagrams in there. The one I have was for 911SCs but it gave me everything I needed for my '76 C3. You will need that manual anyway for all the other fun stuff you tackle on your new car. Congrats! Good luck. Feel free to ask questions and remember that almost nothing is a brand new problem around here so you can likely find it using the search option.

Thanks this help, just wondering if you could give me an idea of the route this yellow wire takes so I can track down where the break is.
I also have the Bentley Manual for SC but I struggle with reading schematics as far as translating it to physical routing so any help would be appreciated thanks! |

Yellow routing.........
Quote:
Kraut, Looking at the factory wiring diagram for '77 (911) here are the routing of the yellow wire from ignition switch @terminal #50. From IS (ign. switch) @#50 it goes to a plastic connector (T6f) followed by another connector (T1e). After the T1e, it branches into two (2): The 1st branch goes to FPR (fuel pump relay) socket @terminal #87. The 2nd branch goes to the 14-pin connector @ terminal #1 commonly referred as T14-1 terminal located in the engine bay fuse panel. Here comes the tricky portion: 14-pin connector has two sides; (a). chassis side, (b). engine side. You could separate this 14-pin connector into 2. One side is left on the car or chassis and the other half goes to the engine harness. Are you still able to follow me? The 14-1 terminal (chassis side) has 2 yellow wires. One wire is the yellow wire from ignition switch referred earlier as 2nd branch (above) and the second yellow wire goes to the heater blower switch (located inside the car). The 14-1 terminal (engine side) has two (2) wires. One yellow wire goes to the starter @ terminal #50 of the starter and the second wire goes to the TTS (thermotime switch) @ G terminal. I would suggest that you make a sketch of the above description for better visualization and understanding. And use this sketch to compare the wiring diagram with your Bentley schematic wiring diagram. If you have any question or more confused now, just ask the question. Tony |
