Too Damn Hot!!!

I was beginning to wonder if I was having a temp guage/sender problem so I figured I would check with an actual thermometer. On the guage there is a white rectangle at the bottom and a red one at the top. The numbers 60 and 90 can be seen around the white rectangle and the numbers 150 and 170 are at the red. I have been running around 2-3 needle widths away from the bottom of the red, even last night with temps in the 70's. I put a piece of wire through an eyelet of a thermomter (so it wouldn't fall in!) and dunked it in the oil tank. It went up above 110C on the thermometer (no further markings). The thermostat to the front opens and the lines are hot; some are slightly crushed. I think my real problem lies with the engine cooler. I can feel air that seems to be blowing by the cylinders, but not necessarily through the cooler. I was thinking of doing beep beep's replacement of dump valve gaskets. With all this stuff out, would I be able to access the top of the cooler to see if it's plugged? What is the easiest way to get the red shroud off?

Clayton,

You can't get the red air shroud off without removing 100% of the induction system! That leaves removing the alternator and fan assembly ... after disconnecting the battery! A ShopVac and skinny nozzle can get at the top of the engine-mounted cooler to remove any grass clippings, leaves, twigs, bugs, rodent droppings and nesting material, etc. Good luck!

Nesting material...as Early said....is something I was about to mention. Recently, a friend of mine told me about a cooked 930 he repaired that had a rodent's nest on top of two cylinders and blocking the cooler intake. He ended up replacing the pistons and cylinders on those two because it was driven for months that way and fried them. Definately pull the fan/alternator assy out and look back in there for signs of fluffy stuff!

My 930 almost always runs two to three needle widths above the white block (the lower one), around 8 o'clock. So your engine is definately running hot.

Unfortunately, you have to dig out everything from the tom of the engine to lift the red shroud, but it ain't really complicated, just messy with all loose parts. (and you'll get to know your engine real close & personal )

Otherwise, i usually lift my car at the local gas station from time to time and use pressurized water-gun to blow out any crud from the cooler and/or cylinder cooling fins from underneath. Try that first!

Cheers!

Too dam hot

Hello ...great thread How do you check to see if the external thermostat is functioning properly? I have an 88 930 and am wondering if Mine is running hot to? With the ac on in traffic It runs a little above 9o clock position? this is in ambient 95 degree ? should the oil cooler be hot to the touch? Should the lines in and out of the fender cooler be scalding?thanks for any information..regards jer

Thanks for the suggestions. This weekend I've been trying to check/adjust the timing and I would say it is definitely off! It appears to be about 5-10 degrees btdc at idle. This is with the distributor turned clockwise all it can. This seems to be opposite of the way I should turn it, but when I tried the other way it advanced more; to the 29 degree btdc mark. Because I was at the max adjustment, I tried rotating the wires over 1 spot and adjusting the distributor the other way to compensate, but no dice. It wouldn't even start. I'm not sure how it got this way, but couldn't being that far advanced heat things up, as well? By the way, the advance also seems to be working because with the RPMs up, it advances more. Any ideas on how to back off on the advance now that I'm all the way in one direction with the adjustment?

Thanks,
Clayton

When the gauge is @ 9:00 the line should be scalding hot. Check the lines in the front fender.
Clayton. What are the specs for your year car? I assume they are 29 degs before at 4000 rpm with the lines off the vacume retard.

It is supposed to be 10 degrees atdc @ idle with line on and 29 degrees btdc @ 4000 RPMs. I can see the timing advance when the RPM's are raised but I'm not sure about 39 degrees worth! And like I had posted @ idle I'm more like 15 degrees btdc. Not sure what to do! Anyone with any ideas?

Clayton

Are you suppose to have the lines off when doing the total? If you are set the total, then check the timing at idle. If it is off then the vacume retard might be bad. Then you have to check the retard unit with a vacume pump
