Too big to fail
|
I had an issue with a Permatune. I was tracking down an ignition issue, and bought one to eliminate my CD box as a source of the trouble. Turned out to be bad wires leading to the CD box. I kept the PT in anyway, and put the original CD box on a shelf. A year or so later, I started having problems with the car flat-out dying at speed. It would just shut off, and wouldn't start for 10-20 minutes. I replaced the fuel pump, relay, coil, cap, rotor, etc, etc, etc, etc. Finally, on a whim one day when the car died in my driveway, I swapped the OEM CDI box back in. It started. I swapped back, and it still started, but it took 20 minutes to find the other one and make the swap. I left the OEM CDI and tools in the car, with the PT plugged in. The next day, sure enough, it died on the freeway on the way to work. I swapped out the PT for the OEM unit, and the car never died again.
Several others have reported similar experiences. If you contact Permatune about it, they will try to convince you that you're an idiot and you don't know what you're doing - it couldn't *POSSIBLY* be theri H/W, after all. They're a world-known electronics maker, and you're just some backyard hack mechanic wannabe. Even Bruce Anderson is down on them.
