'92 C4 on ebay $16900 Is/was this a good buy?
This isn't far from Phoenix. If it doesn't sell I may go take a look. Comments?
The guy sounds like he knows Porsches. He described as a "9" or higher. Book is stamped through 90K miles, but no receipts. |

That sounds like a good value, but I would never buy a car without a PPI...How can Ebay be so popular?

If you're a 964 lover, then yes, those are good prices. Those cars offer a huge bang for the buck. But they are sort of the ugly duckling vintage between the Carreras and 993's. An accident-free 964 for under $17k sounds good to me, even when budgeting for likely engine work. I'd jump on one, if the right deal fell into my lap. But I love my Carrera too much - and I've sunk way more money and sweat into it than I'll ever get out of it.

Yeah, but these are C4s, either you love it or you hate it.

I've read that the handling of a C4 is "different", but don't know HOW it is different.

Similiar discussion here: Thread
For what's it's worth - I don't know how you can call the 964's ugly. So little changed from the carerras. Bastard stepchild yes, but not not ugly... 2nd comment - actually more like a challenge - go drive a 964 that is for sale (I prefer the C2) - get the 3.6 above 4500 rpm's and walk away without buying the car... I dare you.

Hey, I'm not at all slamming the 964. I want one and it's such a super value. But the fact that they're going for less than some G50 Carreras means they're just not as desireable. They have some issues, which have probably been over hyped and that has probably hurt their value-holding ability. Again, if I was starting over, I'd jump on a 964.

That's one reason I bought my G-50 Carerra. It was one of the few models where the prices were somewhat stable. The 964's and 993's resales are dropping like a rock.
I don't have the cash for a decent 993 now - so I bought a 87 cab instead. My plan is to keep this for a few years - then hopefully get into a 97 or so cabriolet or targa. As far as bang for your buck - I think the 964's offer a hell of a deal. Just make sure you get a PPI by someone who knows the issues with them. I almost bought a 1992 C2 Cabriolet that was similiary priced - unfortunately it had the rear seat delete - or it would be sitting in my driveway now. I personally would focus on a post 1992 car - the early 964's, especially the ones that were pre head gasket are a little bit of a crap shoot. Small percentage had the problems - but major $$$$ if yours does!

The seller was willing to allow a PPI after the auction. I was hoping there would be no bids and I could go look at it at my leisure. I asked him to let me know if the deal fell through for any reason.
