Question 996 engine into older 911?

Does anyone know if the 996 engine would fit into the earlier 911s? Or would it be better to just go with a 993 engine.

The quick answer would be to go with the 993 engine - no need to try and fit watercooling attachments (what the heck is this ray-dee-ay-tor anyway. And you fill it with, whadiya call it, koo-lant. Come on now boy, why not just cool the engine by the very air around us. I mean its free, ain't it?).

Seriously, I have no idea if the engine mounts in easily, but know from the well-trodden path that a 993 engine bolts in fairly easily and with all the bits readily available (albeit expensive).

I would imagine the 996 headers/exhaust would require a lot of custom work too (as opposed to buying for instance the B&B setup for 964/993 conversions).

Don't even get started on trying to heat the cabin without using heat exchangers on the air cooled engine.

But if the Chevy V8 guys can do, so, with enough money, could you!

I honestly can't think of a single reason to go the 996 water-pumper route for a conversion like this.

Oh, and it was discussed over on the Rennlist Board too (sorry for linking from here Wayne):

Try and ignore the watercooled is superior bits. Who really cares if it is true because air-cooled sounds cooler.

Hello

The GT engines does "fit" as they are basically ol 935/965.

Anyhow where is the sense for a WC in the car ? American muscle is cheaper and also Watercooled.
