Analog or Digital tester?

My Bentley manual says to use a digital volt meter. Can I get away with using my analog one? Or are there some tests which can only be performed with one or the other? Mine is an '87 Carrera. Thanks.

Certainly, some system tests such as on the alternator would be fine. The issue is really impedance, not analog or digital. Some tests can damage the O2 sensor, for example , with a low-impedance VOM! If you have an old V.T.V.M. or FET-input VOM, worry not!

Otherwise, get a digital multimeter ... even cheap ones have a high input impedance!
