				 | Fuel injector cleaner questions
Had a difference of opinion with a buddy over those fuel injector cleaner additives, I've never been a fan of those products and I figured his Cayman was too new, 20K miles to worry about that, he always uses premium gas, I figured it would not be the thing to do to a Porsche engine as any type of cure or preventative measure. What's your thoughts on these products? Do you use them? Finn

Finn, While I'm not qualified to speak about the chemical composition of Canadian motor fuels, the US unleaded gasolines tend to leave a lot of carbon deposits on injector tips & intake valves; both of which cause all kinds of performance problems. in some cases, a car doesn't pass smog tests for the same reasons. Engines that idle a lot have more issues than ones used for long trips. The oil companies simply do not use sufficient quantities of fuel detergents to keep these components sufficiently clean, hence the occasional need for GOOD fuel treatments such as Techron, Lubro-Moly, and a few others. Its a serious issue that if ignored, plays hell with one's pocketbook at a later date (DFI engines in particular). This has been a chronic problem since the early 80's so its nothing new.

I've used Swepco 503, couldn't tell... I ended up replacing all my injectors, anyway. My system was very oily. Cleaning my throttle body on the car didn't help my old injectors.

Yes, I have used Techron exclusively over the years, but am right now running a bottle of Seafoam in my tank. With a '78 CIS system, it pays to keep things super-clean via annual gas filter changeouts. For me, the use of Techron is followed by an oil change and gas filter swapout. Then, esp. if the weather is turning from warm > cold or other, a reset of the CO2 with a nice warmed up car.

While all cars are different and some are more affected by deposits than others, I've cut apart a denso injector from a Toyota that has been in our family for almost 200K miles and I found nothing on the pintle. No additives and always the cheapest gas bought. Same with a CIS injector's (unknown mileage) last chance screen from an old Saab. Perhaps the ethanol in today's fuel does some cleaning as well. Anecdotal, I know.
