Work transfer to Minot, ND. Any Pelicans in the area?

The company I work for is transferring me to Minot, ND. I will be starting there in early November. Just wondering if there are any Pelicans in the area?

Let me guess...oil patch?

Can't say much about the western part of the state, but there are quite a few P-car owners and Pelicanites in the eastern part of North and South Dakota. You might be familiar with the Red River Region, but look at the Dakotas and Nord Stern PCA chapter web sites if you haven't already for an idea of some of the events out this way.

Of course, as I probably don't need to remind you, the end of the driving season is coming up...quickly. But if you ever find yourself heading east, give me a shout out...

The oil boom is making a big impact on all businesses in the area. My fiance is from Dickinson... I'm in the area a few times a year as I have family in Montana as well. It's what you make of it here. Some of the greatest natural beauty in the world just a couple hours away in the mountains. Enjoy.

Yes, oil patch. Believe it or not, Minot is actually a step up from where I am right now. I've lived worse places (try Ft McMurray, AB, which by the way wasn't as bad as people seem to think). I'm Canadian and the cold doesn't bother me.

I've checked out the local PCA chapter websites, but they are all quite far away and don't seem to be quite up to date. I know lots of classic pcar guys often don't join PCA, so I thought I would check here first.

I've never lived in a bad place...some were not of my choosing but you make it what it is.
I think it would be rather interesting now with the 'boom town' atmosphere.
Good luck.

Max, Thats how it was done in many boomtowns of days gone past for gold mining etc.

Us oilfield boys are always looking for those ladies! Like a ship that hits port, when our hitch is up, lookout, lock up your daughters! Good luck in Dakota, Ive been there many years ago for a winter trip and it was not pleasant, but work is work. I'm glad there is work for hands in need of a job however I'm always let down when I get skinny on the pay and housing costs for oilfield hands. Offshore we we a commodity and paid well. I don't see the drill floor hands making much money on land these days ans thats a real problem; we need more money to bring in and up a new generation. Too many old guys in this field because we still need them and will! !

A bit OT here, but I was one of the original geologists behind the EOG discovery at Parshall in 2006 that set off this boom in North Dakota. When I was up there in May 2006 while we drilled that first well, the farmer whose land we drilled on drove me around in a 1977 Chevy pickup and he always had to come around to open the door for me because the door handle and window handle on the inside of the passenger door were broken. About 18 months later, the New York TImes interviewed him about how his life had changed with all the money he was bringing in with his royalty, he mentioned his old truck with the broken door. When the reporter asked him if he bought a new truck, he said "nope, bought a new door"

Gotta love North Dakotans!

Carbbster, here in Canada the guys on the rig get paid what they deserve. My 21 yr old little brother is a roughneck and started at $30/hr, time and a half after 8 hrs (12hr shift), and $140/day per diem. He clears $500/day easy. Not bad for a kid a couple years out of high school and no higher education. Up here rig wages are controlled by the CAODC. The health & safety standards here are a little more rigorous as well. It's too bad it's not the same in the US.

Thats a lot of jack for a kid roughnecking! Good for him. It can be very dangerous and burn you out. I have never worked on land butnhave seriously considered it to get back in the field. I just reupped my well control last year and have taken subsea courses in Aberdeen. My business is coming back and frankly Im too old at 40 to be ripping on a drill floor again.
