Tire lifespan

So I just ordered up a new set of Hankook V12 Evos for the rear (225/50ZR16). I got 32K miles from the last set. No track miles, but I do drive them hard on the street. I do like a little first gear power slide in a corner now and again!

The fronts are at 50% or better, so elected to not replace them yet.

I know there are a lot of factors in tire life (brand, type, use, etc.) but curious what others are getting out of their tires.

well, michelin, pirelli, conti are -here in europe- (and I guess in the US too) known to be the best. at regular unambitioned use a michelin is said to last up to 10 summer seasons.

I actually ride a set of P7s from 07/08, still 4mm at the rear, no edge wear at front.
they do get good 1st and 2nd gear rev.
I love them!

Wow! I have never got more than 10k out of any set...Bridgestone, Hankook, Continental. Guess my foot is a little heavier than yours.

Seven years is the usual recommendation and of course tread depth.

Unless the tires are bald, out of round, etc., the general consenus is that if tires are more than 10 years old they should be replaced.

I just received confirmation from Tire Rack that my new Yokahama S-Drives were shipped. I generally put around 5000 miles a year on my car but the tires were purchased used from a friend who upgraded so the true miles are unknown. I'm replacing all 4 because I couldn't find a reasonably priced 245/45/16 tire for the rear. I'm going to the stock size of 225/50/16.

true - dont get me wrong. not that I'd use a tire deliberately that long.
it was just a sort of max-possible-estimate for a michelin, as they are so good.
but mostly they do not reach that, as they are mostly worn out within 7 years regarding the tread depth (legal limit in Germany is 1,6mm).

I personally replace mine within the 5-7 year range, winter tires max 5 years.

Porsche Crest

I just got ~30000 miles and 7 years out of a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (1st gen) used as my rear tires. Even after religiously checking tire pressure, the softer center compound went first. They're warranteed for 45,000 (if rotated, which we can't do with staggered wheels) so I was pretty happy with that longevity.

Best,
Dave

What am I doing wrong???

Can't get more than 15K miles out of my rear tires, whether they're Dunlop, Michelin, BFG, or Pirelli. Fronts always due at every other rear replacement, i.e. 30K miles best case.
Curiously, I had exactly the same experience with my '84 944 - lousy mileage from rear tires.

The rears usually wear out first on 911. All the weight of the car is on the rear plus with limited slip, you get really good traction.
We run v-12's on my wife's Speed6 and usually get 35k on a set. More hp and awd so I think that you can expect slightly better tire wear on 911. Unfortunately my 911 runs on 15's and my tire choices are getting fewer by the day: Khumo Ext's

Same here! I don't think I ever saw even 12K miles on a set of tires.

Are you lugging around at 2500 rpm?

I don't recall my SC tire life, but it definitely wasn't over 15k. On the 993, forget about anything over 15k. I don't think the recent LSD helped this either.

The summer blend Yokohama ES100's I used to run stuck like glue, but I was getting only about 6,000 miles out of the rear, and 9,000 miles out of the front.

The Goodyear Eagle GT All-Season tires I run now after 9,000 miles I still get complements on how new looking the tires and tread are. They don't stick for squat, but that's made me a better driver in some ways.

I won't even dignify that with an answer, quite offensive.....

So it looks like 30K+ is definetely on the high side. I really can't explain the disparagy compared to others. I drive my car daily and hard. It is far from babied. I've put 34K miles on it in just under 3 yrs.

The car is fairly light and was aligned/corner balanced just prior to my purchasing it, so maybe that is a contributing factor.

Here is what the tire looks like with 32K on it. Definetely past the wear bars and very thin on the inside edge.

20 autocross events, most with a co-driver, 1 test & tune, and a few track laps. No idea how many miles as I just got my odometer fixed.

Camber

If both rears are inside worn like that, you could decrease the camber a touch and wear them more evenly, would say you did great mileage wise. I've gotten nearly 30K on a set and thats even doing a few DE's. I do alot of highway miles. Think I had Eagle GT's on then. Have some Falkens on now, they don't look to good after one DE but did wear evenly, they seem louder.
