How wide is a 911 engine?
I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a four post Bend Pak lift. I will want to remove the engine from my 87 911 at some point and I want to make sure that I will have sufficient clearance between the runways.
Can someone tell me how wide an air cooled 911 engine is and how much additional space I will need on each side to get it in and out? I know that a two post or scissor lift would probably be easier for this particular job, but a four post is my best option for doubling up on parking space. |
Come on! Somebody must have one on an engine stand...

Do you own a 911?
Go out to your car and measure the distance between the openings where the rubber seals against the engine tin. Add a little for wiggle room as the heat exchangers may be wider. Or measure both and go a little wider. |
In my experience unless the lift can be adjusted width wise, you won't be able to clear the rails.

Side to side width.........
Woody,
The 3.0/3.2 engines are approximately 36" wide from engine tin to engine tin. Add more if you have the OEM muffler installed. Measure the engine bay clearance across the frame and that's ample distance to let the engine drop down. HTH. Tony |
This is a tin-less engine in the middle of a 36" door. Door is removed so I can get the full 35" clearance between the stops.
