Heater solution for 3.6 conversion
I have my 3.6 almost ready, but I need some advice on keeping the heater working. Can I set this up to heat the "old" way by simply modifying the engine shroud and running heater hoses to the exchangers as in the early cars? The reason for this is that I have replaced the stock intake system with individual stacks and am not using a distributor. I would rather not run a hose off the top of the fan shroud, as the stock 3.6 engine does, and am interested in keeping a clean look.
Thanks |
So you don't want to run a hose off the shroud, or you don't want to run anything off the shroud?
If it's just that you don't want a hose, you're in luck - I'm reproducing the RS/Cup air tubes, should be ready in another week. If you don't want anything, you might be able to fab something similar to the early setup that siphoned air off each side of the fan, but I haven't seen anyone do this. |
Does your SC have the kick panel fans? The reason I ask is that people generally get rid of the engine-based booster fan when they do a conversion, which removes one part of the 3.6-liter cooling chain. I'm told that cylinder head temps spike like crazy when a thoroughly-heated-up (i.e. track-driven) engine is shut off, and that this is why the 3.6 had the rear fan continue to blow through the exchangers after shutoff on the later cars. Granted, the "RS" cars didn't have it, but that doesn't mean the heat spike is good for your engine.
The engine blower itself is sufficient (just barely) for heater volume, but it obviously can't contribute to engine cooling once the car is shut down. I'm planning on adding Thom's RS pipe, but I've also put in a pair of kick panel blowers, which I'm going to start using to pull air through the exchangers when the car is sitting in the paddock after a session on the track. |
I have been thinking about the heating issue on my car because I will want to drive it on clear "cold" days. Isn't there some type of in-line blower that could be fabbed up. I seem to remeber doing something like this in my VW beetle days. Kind of like a tamed down version of that "electric supercharger" somebody tested on the board a while back.

Another possible solution is to vent warm air from your front oil cooler to your kick-panel blowers (if you have them)

Embs, if you have the kick panel blowers and the 993 exchangers, you'll have plenty of heat.

I have done something sorta similar with a 3.0 case converted to a 964 distributor.
I used a 993 part number air guide which clears the distributor and fires down like the early style ones. See this link (at the bottom): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65056&highlight=air+gui de |
Thanks for the comments. Jack, I am installing the kick panel blowers from a later car in my SC, to help draw heated air from the engine. I plan to use a modified SSI set up for exhaust (in speaking to some racing shops in the UK, I have been advised that for a mostly street driven car that the SSI's with modified secondary outlet will give me great low end torque with only minimal top end loss if any). I would like to modify the fan shroud to accept hoses from the sides, as per the early cars. I am concerned, however that the engine cooling channels will be compromised by such a modification.
I am interested in the RS/Cup solution however, if anyone has any specifics as to where I can get one, please let me know. Thanks |
