Transmission Let Go - Time to Rebuild or Replace?
Here is my new problem:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1380589079.jpg Looks like a dog tooth on the plug, plus metal shavings. :( Lasted 32 years, 132K miles. 70-75 track days. On the way into work, it failed on a 4-3 downshift at 60 mph, on an exit ramp. Did not lock-up, thank goodness! But it ground for a bit as I got to a safe spot. I can only shift into 2nd now. Gearshift will not go towards 3-4 gate. Engine/Transmission will be coming out soon, and a partial teardown of the transmission. Question will be, rebuild or replace? Did I do too much damage? Time will tell... |
usually just normal replacement parts. check the center case where the 5th/rev shift rod slides and be sure it's not dented in. happens when 1st syncro teeth break and the syncro comes out.

Peter,
Your guide is very good. I also like your section on what to use and what to replace. Sticker shock did set in. But after chewing on it for the week, $2500+ in parts, amortized over the future 15-20 years of use, makes it seem like a good investment. The biggest hurdle is getting used to the idea that the car will be out of service for a long time. For me, this is the time to tackle the rebuild the engine; 3-5 years of work, at least. Once I got my head around the time and cost, it seems like the right thing to do. Just going to miss driving the car for a long time.... |
