tipping hotel valets
So I've run into this several times before, and never known what to do. These days when many folks don't carry cash, it's even worse.
Some hotels only have valet. It's not uncommon in city centers when there is limited parking space. So how do you tip these guys? Do you tip every time they take your car and every time they bring it back? Do you tip at the end of your stay? Do you not tip at all? I'm staying at a hotel in Jersey City (Newport) and will be here all week. I'm in a rental car.

i would usually leave a good tip the first time, and make sure they know you appreciate them each other time. make small talk call them by name ect.. and then another good time when you leave.
make sure they know you are there for the week and you should be good to get good service and not have to fork out cash every single time.

I don't do valet - if that's all that's available I find a different motel.

I worked as a valet at the Intercontinental Hotel in San Diego during college. You should tip during drop off and pick up. At least a couple bucks each time. Now a days, I'm sure a "finsky" is more appropriate.
Have cash on hand, a "I'll catch you later" is cheap and makes you look like an ass. Valet is a service, you pay for a service.

Just out of curiousity what do most Valets make an hour? I'm guessing it's not $2/hr like a waiter, but I'm sure it's probably not $20/hr either.

Yeah, I figured that, and asked the mods to move the post before you posted.

Here's a tip for you, read the posts before answering. If so you would have learned that the original poster realized he made a mistake in posting this in the tech forum and asked that it be moved, and, he was asking about places where all they have is valet service. So how about reining in your air of superiority?

I like to tip when I pick up the car the last day of my stay. I travel quite a bit for work and most hotels that I stay at the valet usually know that I'm staying a week or more and I don't tip every time I pick up the car.
On the other hand if I'm driving my personal car, especially the Porsche, I tip when I drop off to make sure it gets a nice spot. |

I normally tip when dropping off and picking up. My thinking is dropping off is best since that is when they're actually getting in your car.
However, it didn't prevent us from getting a door ding in my wife's one week old BMW recently. ![]() So whenever possible I try to stay away from valet.

Before and after. Before to ensure solid service and no-dent/issue parking, and after to reinforce your appreciation. I also know that all parking garages had good/better/best parking slots. Ask for them by name. Finally, haven't you guys gone to the bottom floor of the office buildings to see what is parked there - the old vintage cars owned by the owners or parking attendants themselves who are using this "temporary storage" as a perk?
Best? Ask them to park it next to their own car after slipping them a fiver.

Just got back from Cabo recently....tipped valets before and after. Granted, it is Mexico, and I was carrying a surfboard as well....but it's just good form. It's only a couple of bucks, and it generates goodwill (just like this forum).
Pay it forward.

A lot of you folks have taken on quite a nasty tone.
