3.2 Carrera distributor oiling
 
Hi there.

I have read several threads, but still not sure of the procedure for the 3.2. The pictures in the rebuild thread are a little different.

Do I remove the felt marked with x then add oil?

What type of oil

How much is recommended

Is the circled gunk to be concerned about

There is a little bit of up and down play in the rotor but no lateral. I believe this to be correct and not a sign of bearing failure.

AFIK you don't remove the felt pad. Just drip oil on it until saturated. Do it periodically. The gunk you have circled looks like it can be easily removed with a rag. I have seen distributors much dirtier than yours that were working ok.

Old school was using some regular engine oil on a distributor felt. Only a few drops..because too much oil might mist and cause the contact breaker points to foul.

The 3.2 won't have that problem. I think a squirt can and some old unused engine oil is fine. Gamin is right..wet the felt down so the oil wicks into the slider bearings and weights/springs.. Your distributor looks very good.

A quick blast of WD-40 inside the distributor housing will keep rust from forming on the steel parts..although yours look just fine.

Wipe the inside/outside of the distributor cap and rotor with WD-40 sprayed on a cloth too..not on the electrical contacts..just the Bakelite surfaces. Keeps moisture or condensation from causing an arc to ground when running. Can happen if you drive/park in the rain. It can get very "steamy" under the 911 engine lid when it gets wet outside.

It is good practice to put a few drops on at every oil change,. Also make sure to install the dust shield to keep the oil mist from the weights away from the cap and rotor. Yours looks to be in good condition. As you can see from the picture, when I bought my 3.2 engine it had no maintenance done by the previous owner.
