Replacing Weber Lead Plugs
I will need to replace a few lead plugs on some 40IDA’s. I’ve read and searched the forum including Paul’s site but have a few clarifying questions. Using .177 BB gun pellets, do you use the mushroom type, I think the BB’s only come in steel. I haven’t found lead BB’s. If the mushroom type are to be used, does the open end go in first and you would then punch the tip end of the pellet?

Lead pellets, not BBs. Head is placed over opening, peen with small hammer or flat ended punch and then trim flashing from opening of gallery with a steel rod that has a spherical end (grind end of 3/13" dia rod or #10 bolt, etc.).

Paul, I’m having trouble understanding the trim flashing with rod that has a spherical end. Would you have a picture by any chance. Thanks

Image shows use of flat-ended punch to deform lead plug into gallery. Use tweezers to position plug & then use flat-ended punch to stabilize plug while peening plug into orifice. Once plug has been deformed into opening; a spherical or rounded-end punch may be used to trim excess lead from opening and create a nice, finished look. This punch can be a 3/16" diameter rod with the end shaped on your grinder. Last edited by 1QuickS; 12-28-2018 at 08:05 AM.. |
