1966 911 Bertone Roadster

Found this in Porshe 911 Perfection by Design Randy Leffingwell

"Quarter mile times ranged from 16.5 for R&T down to 15.6 seconds for Car and Driver, while R&T saw 132"

"by the end of the 1965 model year."

Why, oh why, did they never build this car? I am constantly amazed at the decisions of automakers to kill awesome cars.

For example, how would VW's fortunes have changed if they'd built the SP2 in the US?

daepp,
Seems funny to hear someone speak of the SP2 after all these years. I purchased one new in Brasil in 1973, and loved it. It was prett primitive by today's standards, but superior to a 914 in looks at least.

this was such a cool concept. Fiat went ahead and used it for the smaller 850 spider- the proportions are very very close.
The car looks incredible in person- what a roadster this would have made!
The Tapiro 914 project was another one that was cool 70's funk and wedge styling. Unfortunately it burned (probably the dreaded 4 cyl injector lines cracked and leaked fuel around the plug wires). Supposedly it will be restored. That would have sold a LOT of 914's

I dunno, I guess I'm in the minority, but I have always loved the 914 shape and design. A guy down the road from me had one when I was growing up, and I still remember that car...silver with "Porsche" written across the side rocker panels.

That convertible was beautiful, but if you read the section in that book on this car, it suffered from body flex. They said that this was why Porsche hadn't made a convertible version themselves, because they knew this would be the case.

Very beautiful car that was based on the 911, body designed (obviously) by an Italian, Nuccio Bertone.

Car looks like a Ferrari/Maserati/Lamborghini copy so I am not so keen on the styling. I buy 911's because they look like 911's. Now the interior, thats nice, thats why Porsches have somewhat evolved into. Comfortable sports interiors. I would love those seats in my 66.

... and that is why. It was spendy spendy spendy to make & then Ferry (or somebody) said "Hey! that there thing ain't no 911, y'all."*

so that was the end of it.

if I remember correctly, which I may not, this was a car commissioned by Von Neuman not Porsche. It was produced on a 911"S" platform via Bertone design. Quite a few people were upset this was not a production car.
