heater fan not working...

I hooked the fan motor up to the battery and yes the motor is not burnt.
When I pull the switches between seats up, it's supposed to go on right?
I checked all three fuses back there and they're OK--rusted, but OK.
Where is the switch at in those levers? How can I get a wire pair and connect them while the car is on to verify the line is continuous and working (even if for some reason, the connections don't work when I flip the levers)?
Any help appreciated.

Kurt,

Not sure if it is the same on your car (mine is a '72) but the lever on mine simply opens or closes the ducts in the rear of the car - no electrical switch.

Kurt,

Rust is not good ... on fuses and fuse block NOT containing any iron!

Did you thoroughly clean all corrosion off the fuse blocks?

Why do you need a heater in August in LA?

Isn't the fan switch the top lever on the dash heater controls?

the switch is just in front of the pivot point of the red levers. it's mechanical. it grounds the relay that sits on the rear relay board.

83cab -- there are two fans. The fresh air blower (up front) is controlled by a switch on the dash. The aux. heater blower (in the back) is controlled either by switches on the heater levers, or by an automatic heater control unit.

That's what I thought walker...thanks, I'll try and ground it myself and see if it kicks on.
Warren..okay, it's corrosion of some kind then...I'll have to scrape all that stuff off and see if that makes a difference.
Well, fall is coming and it does get cold (believe it or not) in the mornings and evenings!
Besides, driving down PCA along the coast at night or morning with the top down will get you chilly. I may not need AC, but I need my heater.

You may start with checking at the relay on the rear fuse panel. Much easier to access with a Voltmeter.

I had this exact problem in my '84. It turned out to be the relay on the rear fuse panel. It "clicked" when I activated it so I thought it was OK, but it didn't close the contact. I opened it up, slightly bent the contact lever so it would close, then it worked great. Beats paying >$200 for a new one.

On a '78 SC with manual levers (i.e. no console with dial between seats) you have two levers that, when raised, ground the connection and cause the heater blower in the engine bay to go on.

However, I took the (was it yellow?) wire and connected it to a toggle switch so that I can control when the heater blower comes on. Now, I pull the levers up and let the hot air come in by revolution of engine and push of fan, or by assisting the output with the fan. In other words, I don't want the heater blower motor on whenever the levers are up. This is a nice alternative and you can hide the switch in the bellows that covers the twin levers.

I connected the wires on the heater control, and i can hear it click back there. Now know the fan itself works, and I know the fuses are working..where's the relay, and what do I do with it?

The relay is in the rear, in the same place as the fuse. If you hear it clicking, then it's getting grounded, and its fuse is good.

Do you get power to the blower motor?
