need clutch help

Hi all thought I posted this yesterday but I don't see it anywhere so here we go again.
I have a 1973 911t with 2.4 and a 901 transmission and this past weekend I went for a tour with some friends and we put around 525 klics on our cars.
My car ran great but I had some clutch issues by the end of the weekend.
After a few hours driving I would have trouble getting it in gear as it would start to grind.
I kept having to adjust the nut on the threaded nipple by the transmission end of the cable. It would work fine for a while and then start to grind again.
I replaced my clutch, pressure plate fly wheel as well as through out bearing and pilot bearing about 500 miles ago but did not replace the cable.
It seemed like the clutch was getting stiffer to push but not 100% sure on that one.
When I had to unhook the cable to remove the engine and transmission last winter I counted the threads that were exposed on the nipple and there were 15.5 but now by the time I made it home from the road trip there are about 23 exposed.
Not sure if the cable is stretching some how or if something is bending.
By the time I made it home the only way to stop and start up again was to shut the car off at the stop signs and put it in gear with the clutch in and then start the car again .
For the final 10 miles I could not even shift from one gear to another even after getting it moving so I stopped on a down slope put it in 3rd, started the engine with the clutch in and even then it was trying to buck forward and then just ignore stop signs and drive to my home.
Anyway sorry for the long post but any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

I have another question about my clutch cable that maybe someone with a 901
Transmission can maybe help me with.
Because it is a push type cable action rather than a pull should the cable be encased in a sleeve from one end to the other.
Mine is just bare cable inside the tunnel from the clutch pedal to were it exits the tunnel at the back and then there is a sleeve over it to were it meets the clutch release arm.
My cable is wearing the nipple were it exits the tunnel because the fitting on the sleeve
Came away from the nipple at bit.
It just seems to me that it would be hard to control the cable and keep it straight enough to push when not encased in a sleeve its entire length.
The car would have came with a 915 transmission so not sure it was fitted properly.
Hope I am making sense with my description

Thanks
Mike
