Need clutch adjustment advice on my 70-S

After I drive my car for more than 5-10 minutes it becomes impossible to engage 1st or reverse without grinding the gears badly. I adjusted the clutch tonight so that I have 1" free play in the pedal and I still have the crunching. Any tips? Should I keep adjusting until it goes away or could there be something else wrong? Thanks for any input

There may be a problem at the pedal cluster ... sheared roll pin, fractured pedal arm, fracture in the tunnel at the operating lever on shaft, etc.

I suggest ordering a set of bushings ... and rebuild the pedal assembly.

Warren, same topic here with mine, I have to adjust it for less than 1/2 in play or it grinds. Well it never bothered me before but I think with my new engine (3.0 from 2.0) the clutch is slipping a little. Is there any easy way to check the bushings etc without completely removing the cluster? During my engine swap I replaced the pivot ball, cable, and the trunion (used the aluminum one) but it made now difference, I still have to set the cable "tight" to avoid F/R gear crunch.

Guys, you can check for a pedal/shaft/arm problem by removimg the front carpet over the tunnel. Position yourself so that you can see the cable and operating arm through the 'porthole' on top of the tunnel. Have an assistant operate the clutch pedal slowly and uniformly while you watch the action of the arm and cable.

What you will be looking for is a non-linearity in the action of the cable, that is, a reduction in cable travel ... the further the pedal is depressed.
