I think it's time for a fuel pump
I've owned the car since August of last year and thought it would be a good idea to replace my 30 year old pump over the winter, so I got the car up on stands yesterday and pulled the protective plate. Look what I found. A nice little time bomb just waiting to go off. It wasn't leaking bad enough to drip on the floor, but the piece of foam between the pump and the plate was soaked. Additionally the two mounting points for the pump were both broken so all that was supporting the pump were the hoses. The takeaway from this was, Check your pumps if you haven't, this could have been bad. Warren

You're very lucky you checked that out when you did.
You may want to play the lottery tonight.

Preventive maintenance.....
Warren,
Good finding the condition of your main fuel delivery system before any problem develops. This would be a good time to replace old and brittle fuel lines. Len Cummings (BoxsterGT) has replacement fuel lines comparable to OEM lines if you decide the need to replace some of your outdated fuel lines. Merry X'mas to all and say hello to Beth. Tony |

Tony,
I'll be checking and/or replacing the lines as well. I was under the car to change M&T mounts along with stabilizer links and bushings. See you in Hershey? Warren

Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be a small piece of foam between the fuel pump and the steel pan that covers it and the steering rack? Mine had one, but I don't see the purpose of it nor do I see it in PET. It appears that mine was soaking up water and contributed to the corrosion that you see on the picture of the pump that I posted above. Warren

I already picked one up, but thanks for the offer. Any thoughts on the foam question? Warren

I just took mine out over last weekend and did not see any foam. Seems like a bad place for something that would soak up water.

I'm thinking that someone added the foam to keep the pump from rattling on the cover due to the broken mounts. I'm guessing that this caused the majority of the corrosion. Warren

I found a piece there when I changed out my original pump (on a 89).

Dang, good call on checking it when you did.
That looks like an artifact from the Titanic ![]() Or like the master cylinder that I pulled off my 62 VW last year ![]()

You could use closed cell foam in its place which would not hold water

That's a thought although if it doesn't contact the cover I don't see the point of adding it. Warren

Fuel pump.......
Warren,
Do you have the FP bracket on rubber mount? If not, I would place a strip of rubber material between the FP and the metal band. I've never seen a CIS FP wrapped with insulation foam. As a matter of fact, the FP should be exposed to air flow for additional cooling (fuel flow acts as coolant). Tony |

Tony,
I have ordered a new mount along with the rubber isolators and the band clamp. The old pump wasn't wrapped in foam, just painted black. The foam in question was a rectangular piece sandwiched between the pump and plate which as I said in my last post doesn't make sense to me as I would expect an air gap between the plate and pump for air circulation.
