Post ac vacuum pump

Hey all,

I am wanting to pull a vacuum on my ac and was wondering where one might find an ac vacuum pump. If no leaks I will take to get recharged but I think my compressor seal is leaking. Read the great article about the rebuild and it has gotten me all fired up to get ac going again. It's hot/humid here in central Texas.

Thanks,

Mark

If you have an air compressor, there are inexpensive vacuum pumps from Harbor Freight or J.C.Whitney that operate on the 'venturi' principle ... just for doing what you want to do!

Mark,

Most major rental centers have a pump for A/C work. Make sure you rent a set of gauges at the same time. Look in the yellow pages under rental and sure you will find one.

No offense Warren, I am delighted to see Mark wants to use a vacuum pump to see if he has any refrigerant leaks! If you want to do it right, do not listen to Warren on this one. Get yourself a "real" a/c vacuum pump AND A MICRON GUAGE. If you can rent one, GREAT! Once you know the procedure for installing the pump and guages, you will want to pull a 29inch vacuum @ 40 microns or less. Anything more indicates a leak in the system. If you just use manifold refrigerant guages you will see the 29inch vacuum, but it might be at 500 Microns which means its leaking! So do make sure you use a micron guage as well or you will be wasting your time. For what its worth- I don't use a vacuum pump to check leaks 98% of the time. Only when I want to be absolutely sure and I have limited access to ALL leak points. Sounds like you and your car fit the bill so good luck.
