Mouse damage!
 

I just began digging into my new project car, a 73 911 coupe.
I removed the drivers side floor board to expose the pedal cluster and found a wire harness (about 3/4" round) with several wires chewed, and damaged by mice.
About 7 wires are destroyed in this area.
My question is, should I splice new wires in? Or replace the entire harness?
I will also need to know if this is the main harness? or what it is called. (to find a new one.)

expose the wiring by slitting the harness, replace one section of wire at a time (match the colors) solder them and use heat shrink tubing to insulate. then tape up the harness. nothing wrong with a proper repair job. wire crimps in a harness are not the best way to fix it.

I will attempt to solder them this weekend-thanks for your advice.

In aviation we use wire crimps all the time. It's better than soldering and faster. Just make sure your using AMP type splices, with the right tooling. Not the cheap automotive type. Do you know any Aircraft mechanics?

my experience is that crimps tend to pull, but I've used both. Of course, crimps done right don't pull as often. I would recommend in this case soldering anyway and shrink wrapping around it. It will look the most professional to the next owner who will no doubt view yor handiwork.

If you have had a mouse in one part of the car, you may have had more in other areas.

You are totally correct, however it was a mouse! You hold the critter and I will dunk it in Mobil One (or Castrol for that matter), then we can both light the match... and stand back!

Since its your idea, lets try it on your car first!

Forgot, if anyone runs out of Rogane, Mobil One works well in this area as well! I have tried it for years and while I am still bald, the fuzz keeps growing enough to make me go to a barber every couple of weeks.

How do the little bastards digest copper?

I had a mouse in my old '81 BMW M535i. As well as eating some wires it ate the MOT certificate (UK certificate equiv. to US inspection) and my insurance papers for it that I'd stupidly left under the seat - only left the car in airport parking for 3 weeks.
If I got stopped by the Police I was prepared to say a mouse ate my docs....

They do not eat the wire, they love the insulation around the wire. Course the whole matter is made worse by the droppings they leave, as the area is now filled with mouse crap and where ever they pee it stinks and does wonders for the metal.

Also, was at a shop two weeks ago and they were getting ready to crush a 911 that was terminal. I took all the wiring harness out that I could get to easily. Try to find a wrecked car and get the harness, that way the wires you splice into the harness are the right color code and size!

Wow -crush a 911? NO!

Tommorow?- I solder! I will splice the wires and use heat shrink.
I will also use Decon rat pellets, Swiss cheese and a good old mouse trap!
I will let you know what I catch!

Well, I spent 4 hours on my back today with a hot droplight next to my face, and the fumes from the hot soldering gun in front of my nose.
I found that the little RAT lived in the tunnel. He had newspaper, hay,and all kinds of sh-t in there.
I cleaned it out, soldered, and heat shrinked!
Alot of work, but I really enjoyed it..

I can loan out one of the "girls"....

The Lynx-Siamese are especially tough on rodents! (Or anything else that moves.)
