....

Sorry I wasted your time. I've noticed you guys are attacking new guys more often. Lighten up.

Elombard 10-15-2013 11:29 AM

whoa - very weird, especially the scraping along the tree.....be careful out there!

911Freak 10-15-2013 12:27 PM

When this happens to me(and it has) I immediately pull off the road and let them go by....
I don't get into showing them what my car can do, I'd rather have the road to myself without some rookie or road rage'r crashing! Most LEO would consider that racing, and when anyone or anything is damaged the penalties just aren't worth it...

Save that chit for track days...

Stay safe out there!

JMHO.

Ditto Almost Exactly

Wow- Great narrative and almost identical to my experience a few years ago coming down Sonora Pass here in CA.

Only I was in my Boxster S and the guy behind me was in a Ford Explorer of all things. I was coming down the west side of the pass which is about 11K ft. in altitude and a very steep descent with a lot of twisties. I couldn't believe this guy wanted to stay on my $ss as close as humanly possible under those conditions.

After a while I would slow down on the approaches to turns to let him know it was dangerous to play with a Porsche. I would blast through the turns and pull way ahead of him. He kept on my $ss as soon as I slowed down on the straight aways.

This kept up for almost 20 minutes before I saw him make a fast straight exit to a roadside turnoff just before another set of twisties.

I think he smoked his brakes big time ...... like Alec Balwin says, "I can't believe he didn't see that coming"

We have a ton of bicycle riders, turkeys and large domesticated and wild animals that like to run along and through this road at any given time during the day or night. Sometimes large semis are parked in the middle of this roadway delivering hay or other important items to local farms. it is often dusty, with sand or other debris littering the center. But, most of the time the road is free to drive at a spirited pace... late braking, smooth acceleration, rowing up and down the gearbox.

Snip...

blah blah blah
Lots of dangerous driving...
Blah blah

Please do not attempt this.

Welcome.

How about taking a bit of your own advice and don't attempt this again...
No matter how good a driver you are, it is still an open road...
Reckless driving won't get you any streetcred around here, don't care how new your brake pads are....
Not impressed.

But still, welcome aboard.

TargaHenry 10-15-2013 01:23 PM

I encounter this a lot in my BMW, and I imagine I will in my new Porsche as well. We have a lot of open highway, with a 75mhp speed limit here. Guys in giant pick-ups love to tailgate at 90 all the time. If I have the space, I kick it up and pull ahead, then pull over to the right and let them pass. I refuse to race on the street. Driving fast when you have the road to yourself, and know your route is great. Otherwise, strange roads and stranger people pose way too much risk.

peehonix 10-15-2013 02:10 PM

Wow ... your so cool. No, your an idiot.

big911fan 10-15-2013 02:18 PM

And I Stayed "legal"

I might add that I stayed within the posted speed limits. I just didn't have to slow down through the twisties like he did. Must of had something to do with something they call "center of gravity" and "inertial moment". ;)

I guess he didn't understand the concept. I think he did after that day.

I just get tired of everyone, driving anything, at any time, always trying to test you.

Whether it's at a stop light, on a highway, or on a mountain road it gets old.

I do try to exercise self control but I have my limits!:D

joe payne 10-15-2013 02:19 PM

What's the deal with Pick Up trucks!? You don't see me trying to load 10 sheets of plywood in my 911! They either tail gate me, attempt a race, or just try to scare the crap out of me by doing a flyby an inch from hitting my car. That type of envy should be a sin..

So you are admittedly driving with no regard for yours or anyone's life and you crash into me or me and my family. Not gonna be nice , not at all nice. Sell your car, with your new brakes. You are a menace to society

Ernie,

The "humor" is that the guy calling wanna-be-speed-racer an idiot used the wrong form of the word "your" . . . he used the possessive form when he should have used the contraction of you and are (you're). :D

May I have some of your feel good pills? :p

emac 10-15-2013 04:53 PM

Totally missed that I was focused on idiot, and yes you may. Might have to stay I heard there better with beer!

Two words: track days.

Heck even autocross...

dyount 10-15-2013 05:17 PM

How many can admit to something similar happening to them that you'd not repeat?

"it'll be a great little commuter with gas prices these days"
"the stereo sounds awesome for NPR"
"not sure of the horsepower"

Said no 911 owner ever.
However, I'd advise not to repeat in that if you harm someone from your behavior you'll have that on your soul forever.........not to be taken lightly

I must radiate zen-like peace or something, in 15 years of ownership, not once have I been "challenged" on the street. At most, I've received a compliment of "nice car," but usually it's total indifference.

Rich Gas, perhaps you came on too strong in your intro - it definitely had a humblebrag tone which, along with questionable public road antics, probably rubbed some people the wrong way.

Anyway, welcome aboard.

In summary; the OP presented a long post describing a strange, road rage like incident between himself and another driver when he was out, hauling ass on his favorite public road. Several people, myself included, proceeded to yank his chain about driving like a fool and writing about it as if he were Sebastian Vettel on the streets of Monaco . At this point he said that he has been tearing up public roadways, regardless of the risk to himself and others, since the 1970s, and that it is OK because he is such a good driver, and the rest of us are posers and don't have the stones to drive fast on public roads. He then got upset about additional cat calls and beat feet. :D

Uncle 10-15-2013 06:28 PM

Yep. That sounds more or less like something that Sedastian Vette would say and or do.

NOLAsc 10-15-2013 06:32 PM

Funny, Uncle. Thanks for the explanation Ronnie's.930.

Rich Gas 10-15-2013 07:50 PM

I haven't gone anywhere... Just tired of the BS. I never once stated I broke any law in my first intro. Not once. I drove aggressively, but didn't cross any lines or break any speed limit (none posted). Move on.

sacoffee 10-15-2013 08:20 PM

I liked his post, some of you need to use your inside voice and refrain from keyboard usage

timmy2 10-15-2013 08:40 PM

All will be forgiven if you post pixtures of your car.
People get real testy here if you are new and only type words without pictures... :)

Rich Gas 10-15-2013 09:06 PM

I appreciate the effort sacoffe and timmy2. Man was I attacked. I was just reading the Mulholland drive thread in off topic the other day... Then I had this crazy thing happen to me... I was excited to share this with fellow enthusiasts... Really detailed, corner by corner. Boy was that a flop. No intention of breaking laws, just a pure (although aggressive) driving experience. I've waited years to join, and needed to talk to etarga about his Led light package, so I thought I'd introduce myself. Sorry I did. Some of the people I admire on here have really surprised me. Hmmm. Did not expect that. I have purchased thousands of dollars of parts from Pelican, and used the knowledge I've gained from this site to do the work on my car.
Better to lurk.

emac 10-15-2013 10:41 PM

RG- As a retired cop I can understand how some, many feel regarding your post. The possible loss of life, theirs loved ones etc even a stupid animal. I have been here for many years and would bet my life that everyone of us have fkd up somehow along the line. Up where I live (chi town) it's hard to be able to get the oil up to 180 unless your stuck in traffic. I would give anything to be able to wind her up the way you did and envy you. I personally think the great detail given in your post might have felt like fingers on a blackboard to some. As you stated there is so much to learn here and so many friends to be made it would be worth staying. Life is too short lets all have fun while we can. Posted this on my iphone so don't burn me for improper English

Thanks emac. Riding a motorcycle in a club around this area has fine tuned my senses, I guess. Anything I say about it will sound like bragging to you guys... So I don't know what to say. You wouldn't like those stories either. I'm taking the car out again now... See you on the road
Too many what ifs in life...

ClickClickBoom 10-16-2013 09:51 AM

Rich,
Every now and again, I manage to blow the cobwebs out, usually happens when AC/DC is louder than average. The ones pissing and moaning the loudest are probably the ones who polish instead of drive. Funny my "It happened again" series never attracted this level of angst.
See ya on the Skyline, Hwy 9 GP circuit!
Odd I just noticed my preference for vehicles manufactured in the 4th year of a decade....

tharbert 10-16-2013 10:00 AM

I read the original post yesterday before it was edited to a one-liner. I knew you would get flamed by a few folks here. You have to remember, there are a fare number of driving enthusiasts that didn't respond or see much wrong with your post. But, there are also quite few very talented racers and instructors here. To that second audience, your antics were more like fingernails on a chalkboard. So, what you did was not universally embraced. No need to whine about it...

I did have one thought as I read the original post... Your actions obviously magnified the danger posed by the a$$hat behind you. Had you reeled in the ego a bit, the yuppie probably wouldn't have been turning sideways in the road trying to keep up. Just sayin'...

Busta Rib 10-16-2013 10:14 AM

Late to the party...again. Never got a chance to read OP's original post, but I think I got the gist of this thread. If you own a Porsche and spend time on this forum, obviously you are an enthusiast and I bet dollars to doughnuts every one of us has driven a tad aggressively on public roads at one point or another. There is a very fine line between aggressive and dangerous and the risk is that you can cross over to the latter before you even know it. That said, it would be hypocritical of many members here to give the OP **** for enjoying his car in a spirited fashion. We've all done it if you've owned a Porsche.

Rich Gas 10-16-2013 10:26 AM

ClickClickBoom...there's my people... We remember the rich and diverse history of high speed late night runs on 280, Skyline and Hwy1... HA, Hunter S. Thompson style... Some lived it.

Josh D 10-16-2013 10:45 AM

Rich,

I, for one, enjoyed the story. I get challenged all the time and it's all I can do sometimes to refrain. In fact just yesterday an E36 M3 got right on my tail as I'm returning home from my daughter's orthodontist appointment. We ended up side by side at a light with some room in front of us. There was no way I was going to take the bait with my daughter in the car (she tells her mother everything!). Had I been alone, it probably would have been game on!

Anyway, I used to frequent a popular BMW forum when I had an E39 528i. This forum had a "kills Stories" subforum where members would brag about who they beat in a race with their car. I'm sure there's probably a "I smoked a 911" story on there today!

Your story and what you did doesn't bother me. Peoples opinion of what you did, whether they agreed with it or not, doesn't bother me. It's when some result to name calling, that's what bothers me. There's just no need for that here. Stick around, most here are good folk.

bivenator 10-16-2013 10:55 AM

I read and enjoyed your post Rich Gas. I enjoy driving my car fast when familiar with the surroundings. I don't think you were excessive in your actions. A lot of stone throwers in these glass houses.

big911fan 10-16-2013 11:29 AM

Let's Be Civil

I agree on several fronts.

First, I'll bet most of us are guilty of letting our testosterone get the better of us once in a while. It's just easier to let it rip in a Porsche.

Second, the prose was well written and interesting even if you didn't agree with the driving style. We probably have never had unanimous agreement on anything here. That's good and the way it should be.

That leads to my last comment. Disagreement is fine and even expected. Personalizing a disagreement should be considered a breach of board etiquette.

Name calling lowers the collective IQ on this forum. I think we're better than that.

Let's always agree to disagree but let's do it with more class than you see on other forums.

Rich Gas 10-16-2013 12:10 PM

Thanks fellas.

I hope this doesn't sound weird, but I try not to let fear dictate how I live my life. That's why I couldn't comprehend the response I got. Wouldn't have wrote what I did... Hmmm
F'n government making us all crazy... Time for a revolution my friends.

Rich
