What is it and what is it worth?! Momo Prototipo Vintage 370mm

hey aircooleys,

just purchased a 911S and it's got a never seen before Momo Prototipo in a haven't seen yet size, it's 370. Prototipo is in white color (no outline) above a engraved MOMO. on the back it says Made in Italy but no production date .. and it's a flat one.

any ideas, what exactly it is and what it's worth?!

thx!

I've seen it go for anywhere from $200 to $400 here on the forums, depending on condition. I'm sure someone who has bought or sold one will chime in.

Sounds like a very nice wheel!

You didn't provide photos or even a description to base it on... but as an average I'd say that Craig is in the ballpark or potentially very low. From the description it sounds like an early '70s Prototipo. If you search around, the range for ASKING price goes up to around $2k (selling is another matter completely) --- but the "value" will primarily depend on the condition.
I'm looking for either a 370 or 380mm for another car. If you are thinking of selling, please send me a PM.

If it is indeed a flat 370mm Prototipo, it's worth north of a grand.

well, I've seen these wheels sell for over $1000, early 70's vintage doesn't typically have a date stamp. The solid hub can also go for $600....so it's quite a find you have. Even that batwing horn button, with the ring in nice patina'd shape and good leather is worth some coin, again, probably $600....I'm sure not everyone will agree with my numbers, this is the internet after all.....but the pieces photographed are probably close to $2500 for everything.

Is there any specific reason Momo doesn't build a 370mm Prototipo anymore?

I'm generally with sonett on this. Both the hub and horn button could get you a lot of $$. The batwing looks like it could clean-up a bit (ie: refresh the leather). But the window side leather on the steering wheel is dry and cracked, that will decrease its value. But in my opinion, someone must really need these for you to get $2500 for them.

MrBonus - there are later production dished 370s and occasionally someone will come out with reproductions. But my understanding is that the companies moved away from flat wheels because they flex too much - something that I can confirm. I would love if they produced a 370 or 380mm, slightly dished Prototipo again.

Thanks, kwy. I currently have a 350mm installed, and like most, don't like how it obscures the speedometer.

agree on the 350 vs. 370 thing. have a 350 jackie stewart installed ('68 911L) and it's a bit too big .. hmmmm

any suggestions on other 370 wheels?

As far as new 37cm wheels go, Zuffenhaus has a replica 911R in 37cm, it kinda looks like this Abarth wheel:

I think that MOMO stopped production on the similar looking 37cm 'Retro' but they're not hard to find. Same for leather Nardi wheels, I seem to recall that they are not currently in production, but they're on eBay and other places regularly. If you google search images you'll get hours of possibilities. And of course there is always going back to the original style, this is actually 38cm:

My guess that it is a matter of strength, the flat spoke wheel tend to flex a bit, on the newer versions they bent them to add strength to the center section, cheers,
