Quick shift knob Q
 

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but already checked the pelican web site and couldn't find anything. I am replacing the shift knob on my 88. What is the best way to get the old one off without damaging anything. Can someone either tell me, or steer me in the direction of an article that describes this?

There is a crush-sleeve between the outer diameter of the shift lever and the inner diameter of the shift-knob. It is just a case of pulling hard with a bit of a twist, or you could use an open ended spanner (perhaps protect the whole affair with some tape) under the knob and lightly tap the under side with a plastic hammer until the knob comes away.

The knob for the G50 in your '88 does not use a crush sleeve.

To remove, gently pry out the plastic shift pattern insert from the knob. The knob is held on by an Allen bolt that screws directly downward into the shift rod.

That's what I thought, but I didnt' want to go prying away at things before I knew what I was doing. Thanks for the reply!

Let me know when you successfully 'gently pry up' the knob insert. If yours is a little worn like mine - when you pry up the cap you will ruin the fit and finish of the factory leather to plastic insert junction. Let us know how it goes. I was able to remove mine by simply grabbing the knob and unscrewing it as one piece. The downside is that the knob is not completely snug when you return it to the proper position.
