After I remove this CD changer controller, I'll be left with a very deep pocket in the console.

Was it originally this deep, or am I missing a part .. or barrier of some sort?

The space looks about right. Mine has some rubber material on the bottom, anti-skid surface. Don't know if it was original or added by previous owner. Does help keep cellphone, etc. from sliding down into the well. Should be a piece across the back of the bottom or maybe it's an insert. Have to take a pic tomorrow and post.

looks right, and the rubber stuff was added by someone joe. here is a shot of the console out of my 83.

Yes, my '87 console looks just like that. I am actually in the process of removing mine. I ran into a problem removing the wiring for the a/c controls. The access in the back is too small to remove the controls. I will take a pic of mine and post it for reference shortly.

Scooter - Undo the nut holding on the switch. Believe it or not, you will be able to get the switch out. It has been a while, but there is just enough room. You do not want to break that hollow line.

That switch will come out when completely dismantled as Christopher said. I just had mine out a couple of months ago. Just treat it all very nicely so you don't ruin that capillary tube. Of course, my AC is useless so it wouldn't really matter in my case.

Took it out today with some problems. One of the switches would not fit through the existing hole, so cutting was the only option. :(

What is the capillary tube? I am not sure, but I think it is ruined.

I am removing the entire a/c system, so I don't think it is that big of a deal if I ruined anything.
