Cost of windshield replacement for an '86 Carrera?

The windshield in my '86 Targa has a crack in it which is too big to fix.

The quote I got on an OEM replacement was an eye-watering $923! I did get a quote on an aftermarket one for 50% less.

So two questions - is there anywhere I can get a cheaper OEM windshield? And if I go aftermarket, what's the downside if any?

N.B. My '86 has the copper wire antenna in the windscreen (hence more expensive). The aftermarket quote I got was for a Pilkington.

It's not just the glass sir, it's also the seal.

You realize that these cars are notorious for rust at the corners of the windshield? Some from a seal not sitting in the frame right. Or, maybe from glass that's cheaper and just a little bit off.

Tread carefully. URO parts are also cheaper than OEM, but do some research and see what experience others have had.

300 bucks is the quote I got from safelite. That was 6 months ago....and included a new seal. However they wanted me to bring it to the shop because it took 3 people to get it out of the car.

Your insurance will cover a large part of the cost I think? If so you might be able to pay up for the windshield you prefer. You might somehow hit on a replacement of stock for a good price - Classifieds here can be useful.

Earlier this summer I bought an OE St. Gobain-Sekurit windshield for my 86 and the cost was $265. That was just for the glass. There is crazy mark-up on glass. Shop around. -J

I also got St. Gobain Sekurit for a few hundred, some after market PPG don't have the right color tint ....Also use original seal to get a good fit....it's more compliant.

Where did you get it from? That's way less than the OEM quotes I am getting!

Doherty CM and porschemoose and Reifle - did you use aftermarket glass? And if so, were you happy with its quality? I know I can get it installed for a reasonable amount of $$; it's whether to go non-OEM or not that I am still on the fence about.

Bought the OEM seal here and provided to local glass guy. He sourced a Sekurit windshield for my 88 and installed.... total cost was between 5- 600.00

regards,

Whoa,
I know that my case is not typical, but here ya go. I was doing the usual craigslist search and found a PPG windshield from a glass shop that had ordered it and never installed it and was eliminating stock.

New windshield!

'84 Windshield install?

Used the non OEM seal, completely watertight!

Sorry for the delay - aftermarket glass with the green tint band across the top etc... Very happy with the product (PPG) and the install.

I was quoted very close to that from Richard at ProSource mentioned earlier in the thread. Doesn't include shipping from ProSource as they have a warehouse in Memphis. Ultimately I called a local installer that does a lot of hotrod and custom work as I had to have a w/s replaced on my work car. I asked him to price out the 911 w/s and he came back less that ProSource installed. He got the w/s out of Memphis which was likely from ProSource just at a discount. -J
