Post turbo or supercharger on older motors?

Has anyone added a turbo or supercharger to an older motor, 2.2 - 2.7?
Or has anyon heard of someone who did it, or failed miserably while attempting it.

Why can't it be done?

bb,

There's no earthly reason why it shouldn't work. I've been mulling over it for about 12 months now and I'd love to try it. Using a 2.7 is dicey, as the crankcases weren't up to high levels of real heat (my car has tougher spec cases, though) They frequently pulled headstuds with thermal reactors fitted and a turbo is likely to get a lot hotter than a reactor.

The compression is low enough to sustain a moderate boost figure of around 5-6 psi. Find a decent heat sheild, plumb in an intercooler and let her rip! I don't see why a moderately boosted turbo 2.7 shouldn't produce 250bhp.

If you did start with a 2.7, I'd make sure the motor was nice and fresh!

Good Luck

Turbocharging is probably the best bang for the buck, but as Adam suggests, make sure the engine is up to the task.

If you add 75-100 hp/50-100 ftlbs torque to an engine, regardless of cams, intake, exh. etc., engine life is compromised. The base 130 hp, 2 liter, 911T engine is relatively unstressed and lasts a long time. The same engine with 300 hp, 250 ft.lbs torque will not last as long.

Moderate amounts of boost should be fine on a healthy engine.

what about some of the "non porsche" turbo's that I have heard some people are putting into their 914's? has anyone here done something like this or heard of it being done? I don't want a race car but was just wondering if this would be an inexpensive way to put some more zip into my 2.2 that I have just rebuilt.
