Drove a 993 Carrera S Tiptronic, today ...

My old man dropped by the local Porsche Centre yesterday and was given a 993 Carrera S to evaluate over the weekend. Actually, I suggested he test drive this car, which is a:

1997 993 Carrera S Tiptronic, 2WD. The paint is black metallic, and the interior is tan. It's only done 46,000kms.

This is the third 993 Tiptronic I've driven, and after yesterday, I think I now understand why some people opt for this transmission; it's fun -- and safer -- changing gears while keeping both hands on the wheel! Having said that, it's hard to get the box to shift smoothly, and you've only got four gears. More trade-offs than pluses? Well, I've driven manual 993s before, and I found the 993 6-spd transmission to be notchy and heavy. This is a tough one.

Transmissions aside, 993s are definitely a blast to drive, and, obviously, much more forgiving than any preceding 911. With the wider rear track, and the turbo brakes, you could get yourself into a LOT of trouble.

Great car. Is my old man going to buy it? Well, it's the right car for him, so there's a good chance. He certainly likes it, but, of course, he'll need all of Sunday to know for sure.

Here's some shots:

Yeah, that car has obviously been abused. Better let it go.

Just so you know the Carrera S does not have turbo brakes. Only the Carrera 4S and the Turbo have them. At least that's the case for the USA versions. It was not even an option on the 2WD versions.

That car looks absolutely gorgeous

Your dad is a man after my own heart Matt

I love the C2S/C4S 993's. I aspire to upgrade to one of those ONE day Any interior shots?

How does it compare (drive & price wise) to the 996 he test drove a couple weeks ago?

Guys, coming from me, this is an extreme compliment! The C2S, 1998, is one of the few cars I think rear flares look good on....my compliments to your Dad, Matt...not only does he have decent taste, he brought you up to appreciate automotive quality as well!

Cool plates. Does he get to keep 'em if he buys it?

Matthew,

Now we're talkin'!

That thing looks bad-ass. Here's hoping that this is the one. It presents beautifully!

Here's some more eye candy, including some shots of the interior and the engine.

Enjoy!

I hope they're going to cut him a good deal...they screwed up at the factory and put the steering wheel on the wrong side!

I just went for another drive. Talk about thrust! My God! I can see why some of you guys opt for the 3.6 transplant!

But I'm still not sure about the Tiptronic transmission. I guess if the shifts were quicker, and if I had an extra gear and shift paddles behind the wheel, I could probably own a clutchless 911.

Does anyone know anyone who races a Tiptronic 911? Does anyone on this BBS actually own -- and race -- a Tiptronic 993?

Hey, guys, chicks really dig black 993s!

Now, to respond to some questions.

John,

Sorry, I was under the impression that the Carrera S had Turbo brakes! The brakes on this car are otherworldly, and as a result, Turbo brakes might be overkill. But then, I guess you can't have enough stopping power, just as you can't have enough horsepower!

Merv,

Shannon's father test-drove the 996. He liked it so much he bought one -- a 996 Carrera 2 Tiptronic. How would I compare the two cars? Well, both have plenty of power, and both are very sure-footed. I'm not sure if a standard 996 Carrera would be quicker around a track compared to a 993 Carrera S. I think it'd be close. If I had the dough, I'd buy the 993 -- last of the air-cooled 911s, and, IMHO, better to look at.

Paul,

I can thank my old man for introducing me to 911s. He's been in the automotive industry for over twenty years, and has brought home a lot of interesting cars. But the 911s always left me spellbound. I guess they left him spellbound, too!

Chris,

The plates are very cool. But he's got his own personalized plates, and I'm sure he'll put them on whatever 911 he decides to buy. If he buys this car, I'll ask him (nicely!) if he'll let me have the RNA 959 plates!

Adam,

The exterior/interior colour combo is fine. The mileage is fine. It's just the transmission -- I guess I've just done too good a job of decrying these "slushboxes" in the past! LOL!

matt,
between the families we can almost show an evolution of the longer wheel based 911
we have urs and adams, we have seans sc targa, graham cooley has a 964, ur old man has the 993, and my dad has the 996
might make a nice evolution shot

There's something wrong with that license plate: "Rare Normally Aspirated 959"!?

Great looking car.

Well, we now know what your verdict is Matt, what's your dad's verdict after having it all weekend? Will he go air-cooled or water-pumper?

What's he test driving next? Try to get him into a 993tt. Just not sure they're available in Tiptronic tho

I like the 97 look. I can understand why as cars evolve people want to upgrade but in this case this is definetly the end all. Makes me want to blast off now!!!!!

Wow, nice car Matt. One thing you are forgetting when you appraise the tiptronic - the car is for your old man, not you

Plus if he does buy it you'll feel beter about driving the old mans car down to pick up a pizza etc.

Nice neighbourhood.

Mikkel,

Yes, I'm finding it very hard to keep my eyes off it!

Merv,

My father thinks that Porsche took a step back with the design of the 996, so it's going be a 993, and I think this particular car is the one. Last night, I gave him a demo of what a Tiptronic 911 can do in the right hands, and I think he forgot all about manual 993s for those hair-raising fifteen -- or so -- minutes!

The PCM are going to let him keep it another day; he asked nicely! LOL!

Brian,

I think all 993s look pretty nifty!

Bill,

I'd have a Tiptronic 911, but only if I could keep my '74 Carrera!

Great news Matt. I'm sure he won't regret buying the C2S

Perhaps you can borrow it for the next Melb Pelican drive day, OR even better, invite your dad along now that he is part of the clan
