Interested in working on my 1984 Targa myself

I was wondering if there are any books/technical manuals that might help me do some of the maintenance on my 911. Nothing too crazy but things like changing the motor in the electric window or replacing the antenna. Any help/advice appreciated. Thanks!

you need a copy of Wayne's 101 projects for your 911. Sold here at Pelican. Best money you'll spend on learning how to DIY .

I've had a lot of fun working on my targa over the past 16 years of ownership. This board has provided invaluable information and parts for my projects. I recommend a Bentley manual which has come in handy as a reference for component diagrams and torque settings.

Two really important thing to have are a well lit place to work and proper tools. Without either one of those your projects may not be very much fun.

Order the DVD from yellow cab if you want to be able to do your own tune up! It definitely provides a confidence building "how to" especially if you prefer seeing it rather than following a book with random pics. Definitely worth the money!

The PET (Porsche parts diagram) is almost as useful as the manuals, and free!

The other guys have already hit the high points. You should post your location under your ID. Never underestimate the willingness of a local Pelican to lend a hand. -J

Even a new one will pay for itself in no time.

Mind you once you got a lift, the "while you are in there" are coming at a faster rate

All great advice... Remember everything will take twice as long, and be 2 x more difficult than the book says. You will have to fabricate some tools... Like for CHT... Get a magnet and a mirror, both on a pole... I just duct tape them to old hangers. Invaluable.

Hey Nineball,
Thanks for your edit. A lift would be great, no doubt. My garage is a 2 1/4 wide, looks pretty much like your's; don't know if there would be a way to fit a 4-post lift in there to park 1 car on it and 1 under it, plus use on projects. It would be tight even for a 911 and 951.

Air tools are also another nice addition to the 'toolbox'.

Don't worry about a lift. I have dropped my engine about four times already and never needed a lift. Nice to have, but not necessary. Start with some easy stuff like Oil Changes, Valve adjustment, and then work your way to bigger and better. And like others have mentioned, put your location in your profile. Pelican folks are generally pretty friendly.

if i had the height i would. sadly i can't even use the full 48" of lift before my car gets to the ceiling.
